College Freshman trying to decide majors. I've got enough hours coming in to double major/dual degree without taking another year.

What are some job prospects for the following combinations of majors:

Philosophy/Linguistics

Philosophy/Finance

Linguistics/Finance

Econ/Finance

Econ/International Affairs

International Affairs/ Finance

Marketing/Advertising

Romance Languages/Finance

the reality is that really, nobody cares about your major so do the combo you love. get a solid internship or two to prove that you're capable of working in the real world. by solid, you should at least be an excel monkey, but not a copy/coffee monkey. like bothered said, beg if you need to.

totally depends what school you are in.

If you're in a good school, GPA trumps all. Do something that either inevitably leads to easy ass GPA (like asian studies) or something you would actually enjoy doing work for.

anemonic mnemonic is right BUT taking a few econ/finance/accounting/math classes never hurt anyone and can keep open some doors that would otherwise close.

as usual people on these threads severely understate the importance of the school. if you're at harvard, major in whatever, since you'll have good options. if you're at directional state univ. i would take more "vocational" classes and double major in something else that i'm more passionate about.

Hmm, any work I've seen in that statistics or econometrics would really make a difference in getting a job has required at least a Master's degree in one of the subjects--I mean quantitative jobs. An understanding of statistics is crucial for a lot of jobs, surely. I have four semesters of statistcs/econometrics but I still don't feel qualified for any jobs that require heavy statistical analysis. Probably due to my aversion of the subject.

For flyfisher, I could understand why it mattered for entry-level economic consulting. But I always thought econometrician/statistician jobs in finance required a minimum of a Master's qualification. Did your undergraduate training in regression analysis really stand out? I'm asking seriously because if that's the case I have been underselling myself--as long as they don't expect me to figure out plims and all that boring crap.

Edit: Furthermore, would they expect you to do anything more than plug data into a statistical software package and interpret the results? Seems easy enough if that's the case. The jobs I have interviewed for that care about statistics only want to know if I can use Stata, SPSS, etc., and interpret the results. They haven't cared about my knowledge of the theory or my math skills.

having some background in econometrics is a near-requirement for economic consulting, and i haven't used it at all since i've been there. i think it's more of a weeding out mechanism. and it does come up (or at least the way of thinking comes up) so it makes sense that they think it's important. i think having some background in it can help immensely, even though for most jobs you won't use it regularly.

the emphasis would be in sas, stata, etc. but you still need to interpret/think about the results.

Yeah, I figured it was at least a weeding-out mechanism for consulting in particular. I would assume any technical econometric/statistic work is going to be left up to the people with graduate degrees that had an emphasis on the subject. The interpretation is the most important part.

Funnily enough I am looking at some non-economic consulting jobs that want me to have the knowledge of statistics despite my dislike of the subject (nothing beyond reyond classical regression so far). Most of them focus on SPSS, which luckily I learned as part of my Master's. I know Stata and EViews from econometrics, of course. Could one get by with those packages or is SAS a universal requirement? Most jobs I have seen ask for SAS specifically, but I never used the package in any course. I've even used LISREL, but never SAS.

It is the most cumbersome one I've dealt with. Stata and SPSS are the easiest. LISREL is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it, but I don't think one would ever have a need for it outside of academic research.

I've yet to come across a econometrics text that doesn't confuse what--in my mind--should be a relatively straightforward subject. Of course the mathematics of it is important, but I think the application should be stressed more at the undergraduate level. I took a statistics course for my Master's that basically covered the same stuff as econometrics (mulitple regression, etc.), but I felt it was much more straightforward than my econometrics course because the application was stressed over the mathematics. The mathematics was covered, of course, but I feel like I actually learned the logic better than in econometrics.

if you're young i say medicine is a great choice. neurology for one. most patients that see neurologists either dont have any serious problems(like migraines or some bullshit) or they have something incurable like myeloma. so neurologists basically do nothing. it's like family medicine, except instead of diabetes+cardio+blabla the patients usually have a very specific condition and very few options to choose from. not the highest paid job. but you can make $200k while spending most of your day watching porn or something. and of course it is considered one of the most intellectual specialties because all the things that they treat are incurable. and women neurologists are often at least 6/10. that may not be impressive to u, but not many drs are above average..
