WUSTL is known for being pompous, no real reputation, and inconsistently ranked. Its business school is crap. Its only up there because of its Med School. None of its undergraduate departments are spectacular, its the graduate schools. I'd commonly confuse Wash U with Georgetown and GWU.
I'm just warning you, WUSTL's reputation is recent and may not be forever. Its a hard choice, but I know Vanderbilt will always have the name of the steel magnate, which is a stronger consistent reputation. |

The capital improvements that have occurred over the past 5 years are ridiculous, but of course you wouldn't know that because your knowledge of the school is limited to internet message boards.
If you think the rankings are just a flash in the pan, it only shows how painfully misinformed you are. Unless the administration is turned over to retards, WUSTL will remain in the T15 and will probably establish itself in the T10 within the next decade. |

Vanderbilt is the most social of the three schools. Strong greek scene, plenty of hot girls, the campus ethos is white, upper middle class, and southern/mid-Atlantic.
Washington U has a pretty campus, but is in St. Louis. Academics fine, but otherwise unremarkable school.
If money is even an issue, go to Rice. If not, and you like to party hard with the Dean brothers, go to Vanderbilt. |

Date: April 4th, 2008 9:55 PM Author: Sinister exciting brunch 'Rice is great. Its physics, astrophyics, computer science, chemistry, music, biomedical engineering faculties are outstanding. What pushes it over the top is its location. Houston is a world-class city with a great ballet troupe, symphony, opera, theatre, nite life and restaurants. Lots of excitement there. It's not as expensive as living in the north, and it's close to the ocean. These attributes - in addition to the diversity to be had there - renders it far and away the choice amongst it, Vandy and WashU.
I will certainly be gunning for a faculty position there when I finish grad school. I wouldn't be very happy in St. Louis - it's an awful awful city. Nashville - well, I could live with. But never Missouri. |

As for the OP, if you are upper (middle) class, white, and like to hang out with people of your kind, Vandy is for you. If you are anti-Greek and like to still party a bit, Rice is the place to go. Wash U is probably the least social out of the 3. Not to say it is anti-social, just not as happening as Vandy, nor Rice I'm guessing.
(I'm a WU alum who has lived in TN, and have friends that went to Rice).
