I got accepted to the MS Sociology program at Utah State University with a non-resident tuition waiver (around $7000) and an assistantship stipend of $3500 for 8 months (10hrs/week). Is this a decent funding offer considering it's at the Masters level and not Phd.?
Also, are stipends subject to taxes for international students?

Taking that into consideration, off campus housing should be covered with that money. I don't know how well the program is though, as Utah State isn't the best school in the area. I would say that this is indeed a decent deal at the master's level, but it's hard to make a judgment without knowing your aims. |

Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances USU was the ONLY university I could apply to this year, my present circumstances ABSOLUTELY do not allow for the luxury of waiting another year for the opportunity to apply to a better program, therefore I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and accept the offer (despite my belief that I really could have gotten into a much better program elsewhere). I do have ambitions towards pursuing research and becoming a tenured academic after my post-grad is complete.

I'm confused, could you please elaborate...I was led to believe that all stipends are taxed. |

Date: April 10th, 2007 1:22 PM Author: Exciting halford income below the 4k level (the exact # might have changed a little) is taxed when you get paid, but you get it back if you file income taxes.
You need to check whether the waiver is considered income also, I don't remember. |
