Hello !!

Please help me in assesing my chances of getting in Yale MA in International and Development Economics and Msc, Development Economics at oxford

I am pursuing BA Eco Hons from University of Delhi. score of 1st 2 years is 69%, with 73% highest in class and my refrees have mentioned me as very good in academic exams.

GRE: (Quite low) Quant 730 and Verbal 570, 80th percentile each

Maths prepration: Linear Algebra, Multivariate calculus and i opted for additional maths in second year

Statistics: Probability, sampling, regression, and econometrics in third year

Interest in Development economics: reading development economic as a paper in third year. Have a research paper in development economics, which is very much appreciated by professors and the persons whom i have showed it, it makes use of many econometric and technical techniques i have learned in undergraduate

Lot of expreience in presenting papers in University of delhi, in many conferences.

refrees have written very good for me, and have mentioned about my interest in academics, and development eco, along with the analytical ability.

Do i stand a chance of admission to Yale or Msc. Development eco at oxford??

no work experience?

based on that profile, i'd say you have a 30-40% chance of getting in, which is probably a little bit above their acceptance rate.

about 20% of the incoming IDE class is from South Asia. I know a few of them personally. your profile seems to give you a fair, but not great chance of getting in. i have never heard of your school before, but i know very little about the indian education system. but you don't have anything in your profile that stands out or makes you guaranteed to get in, esp. compared to some of the south asians i know who were in IDE in previous years. having said that, your qualifications aren't terrible either.

so you probably have as equal of a chance of getting in as the average indian applicant to IDE, which i would say is probably between 30-40% (for every 10 applicants like you who apply, maybe 3 or 4 will be accepted). if you wrote a great personal statement emphasizing WHY you want to do IDE, it might improve your chances. or if your recommendations are both amazing and come from well-known people, your chances will be higher.

I have a research paper in development economics, which is accpeted by some well known repositories and i have sent it for publishing too.

My profs have written very good for me, especially about my research interests.

Can u make me contact to some of the south asian students u know??

Googling your email address brings up this paper--http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1320633

"Abstract:

In this paper, I will develop an insight into the growth process of Indian Economy and will find that increased inequality due to unconventional transitions have its negative implications for future growth prospects and the overall issue of sustainability. The objective of this paper is to throw light on theoretical concepts of growth process and to suggest some policies which are in line with the conventions and at the same time are well integrated with the contemporary Indian Economy. Issues like that of consumption inequality, labor mobility etc. have been identified as inhibiting factors for a smooth flow of transitions and with a sector specific analysis, have been dealt with, so as to remove them and make the transition process free flowing, which will bring about a sustainable long-run growth strategy."

This kind of writing wouldn't get you a passing grade in a high school class. I wouldn't bank on it getting you into Yale.

ok, i will ask them and if they are interested, i'll give you their emails.

but i would just advise you to FUCKING CHILL. you already submitted the application. what difference is it going to make if someone writes to you and says "oh, you have a great chance of getting in" or "thanks for coming out"? seriously. just relax and focus on other things at this point of the game.

Dude,

I always hate these "Chances?" threads more than anything. You know your whole profile better than anyone and because you are interested in that specific program, you probably have researched the requirements and admin stats more than anyone here. Thus, you more than likely know damn well better than anyone else what your "chances" are.

You'll never know until you apply.

Mainly, the program is a cash cow. It is not even a standard MA in econ. They give no aid and the degree is one year and will cost you well over 50k. I'd just save my money and get a job. But the decision is yours. Just because a program is a cash cow, doesn't mean it is not a good program or not right for you. Apply and see if you get in. No matter what anyone here says, it will not change your "chances".

Good luck!
