However, remodding NYCFan this afternoon was certainly one of the easiest choices ever.
Some advice: if you want to convince someone that mods are a bad idea, it's generally not a good idea to spam the hell out of the board. isn't this why we all ran away from PR? because of board nazis? NYCFan deletes threads like no one's business. some of these threads have no mention of him at all.

You know what the proper thing to do when something like that is going on?
Send an email! Our email address is no secret and is linked off the main page.
We did not receive even *one* email about this situation. Not one. Instead, we got a completely spammed board.
When I noticed (on my own, without anyone bringing it to my attention) that NYCFan deleted a thread that shouldn't have been deleted, I immediately demodded him. If this stuff was going on earlier and someone emailed me about it I might've acted earlier.
However, I'd rather have a few innocent threads deleted than a board completely filled with spam. As for why I didn't appoint someone "actually respected by members of the community," if you are right and "very few people on this board can stand" NYCFan, then someone highly respected by most of the community is probably not the right person for this job. |

Umm, off-topic was *never* the basis for this board. That's why school-related is the default. The primary purpose of this board has always been the information in the school-related section. You know this, we've had this discussion before.

If you want balance in articles, go post some. The problem with Byerly/bostonian was endlessly spamming the same articles all over the board over many months (almost a year now actually) and then refusing to stop even after being told to quit it (Byerly's failure to stop, and those other trolls constantly posting NYCFan's personal info, are what caused NYCFan to get modded in the first place). |

[edit] Going more in-depth with this theme of intentions, it has been rach's intent from the very beginning to make this into a real college/grad/law forum, not just a place for us to get together and shoot the shit. So in terms of that, post-for-post, NYCFan is the note-worthy person here. You may not like his Harvard trolling (and that's what it is: trolling; it is NOT spamming because he doesn't literally flood the board with threads), but whenever anyone has a question or requests information from him, whether it's Harvard-related or not, he does his best to seriously answer that person. None of us can boast the same. Plus there is nothing truly malicious about him, especially when you consider that he gets attacked constantly and has had his private information posted over and over (and in reply to the poster above who said it was fair game because it's public information, that doesn't matter. Posting someone's information without his consent has been against the- very few- rules from the beginning, and whether or not the rules are fairly applied is a good question to raise, but it is certainly beside the point). However, bosterly etc. have only had malicious intentions, and the same for whoever is responsible for bumping dozens of NYCFan's threads the other day.
You're not helping anything by being dickwads. You're being provided a service and you've taken it for granted. It's NOT hard to follow the rules: don't spam, and don't post people's private information. If those two things did not occur, then there would have been no need for NYCFan to have been modded in the first place. But since we're obviously incapable of keeping ourselves under control, well, we wind up with situations like these.

You know why nobody emailed you? Because very few people know how to. The email address isn't exactly the most visible, now is it? We've been over this before, but for whatever reason, you like to tuck it away on a sub-page of the main page - which nobody really visits. Why not have this 'contact' link at the head of each forum? Its akin listing emergency phone numbers somewhere randomly in the yellow pages.
Furthermore, do you think you could be any more ambiguous with the contact link? Who/what are we exactly contacting? The webmaster, moderators, the owners, or Jesus H Christ? This "Staff" thing is pretty worthless, and as you've said yourself you're barely on this side of the board. Why would anybody want to contact *you*? You're not visible...which of course brings up another reason to let posters know who the mods are. If there *is* a problem, we know who to get in touch with.
And out of all the posters to mod, you picked 'Fan? How stupid was that, really? He's the one that gets picked on the most, so great idea, hand the kid that's being bullied a gun. He's never presented himself as the most balanced poster, now has he? And as you've more or less implied, 'fan is a troll. Again, brilliant decision.
Everything that you've hoped to accomplish by making 'fan a mod could have been done without all of this headache. Simply being up front with the community, being a little transparent, and making a better decision with a choice of mod(s) would have been fine. But no, you have to be all cloak and dagger about this whole ordeal. Then you bitch and moan about spam (which, for the record makes the board no less legible than does say, one-sided trolling, or racist trolls - or do those only matter when they go after *you*?). You've proven that the only way to get your attention is to spam the board. This is the bed that you made - it may be a festering pile of dung, but its your bed nonetheless. Enjoy sleeping in it.

When we contacted you, you acted defensively and did not even say you'd look into it. I didn't say that you were behind certain deletions, I asked if you were. There's a big difference.
So to recap:
1.) When contacted, you refused to say you'd look into the problem.
2.) When you attempted to solve the problem, you told no one about it.
Does it really surprise you that in light of these circumstances people might have behaved badly? Give us a reason for why you do things. Tell the board at least that you are removing someone from a moderator position, and therefore the inappropriate post deletions should no longer occur. You wouldn't even have to say who the moderator was. You just have to give us the impression that our concerns are being given fair consideration. |

If we wanted off-topic gone we could have that whole section wiped out in 30 seconds. I don't see how anyone could possibly think that's the goal here. |
