Congrats. Based on your comment re $8M house I'm guessing you're gung ho on Hillsborough or somewhere on the Peninsula? Because you'd be right it doesn't seem like it's worth trading up from a $2.5M property till you approach the $7-8M properties, it's the cruel nature of the area. But if I were in your shoes I'd be aiming at a $5M max property, even less. You can get a very pleasant house in East Bay (Piedmont, Orinda etc) or Marin for that and wisely invest the rest and probably just retire.
Living in an $8M house means you'll feel the pressure to have a lifestyle that matches, which means you'll probably spend a lot more than you anticipate. $8M houses are for people worth $50M+ and with multiple properties. Not someone with 50% of their assets tied up in one house.

I think Hillsborough/Atherton etc is bullshit IMO - I know it’s an unpopular opinion but if you have kids I think Half Moon Bay/Pacifica is better. Almost every person I know who grew up in those insanely wealthy areas is fucked up.
Seconded on the east bay though. If you pick the right area (Piedmont/Kensington) there are some very nice homes; but the issue is the culture especially if you have kids…but then again that’s more of an endemic issue in the area.
There’s always Marin too.
