I say this as a lifelong fan. Now that I'm older, I realize that maybe 4 or 5 of them are somewhat great, and the majority are very mediocre movies

They were just supposed to be fun movies, not as self-serious as capeshit movies.

You can reduce any hero quest movie to capeshit, really.

But the big difference is that 007 did everything he did without super powers. He was an ordinary athletic guy who kicked ass and fucked beautiful women. It was achievable for guys, there was nothing different about him except his job.

Far cry from idolizing a hero who has super powers

its wish fulfillment. similar in ways to Entourage - imagine if you were a rich A lister. Imagine if you were a cool spy with unlimited access to money, cars, women. Nothing wrong with that at all. Problem is they tried to turn it into an event that occurs every 4-5 years. Its just not that deep, nor should it be.

It was actually better when they cranked them out like clockwork ever two years in the 70s and 80s. Slowing the pace down causes undeserved hype to build

I don't think anyone even holds it in all that high of regard. Millennials like Brosnan because of Goldeneye. I think since the game was so awesome that seeing the gunbarrel sequence brings all of us involuntary joy and allows us to forgive a Film being boring and shit. Anyway Film-wise it's almost like Star Wars in that the "original trilogy" holds up the best of any of them. I've never met any boomers who are huge fans and love Sean Connery or something. Remember, these Films weren't on video, they just existed for a month and then disappeared.

By the 70s and 80s the mediocrity of the franchise was the primary framework in real time for all pop culture discussion of 007. The whole point was the Cold War.

why do they say it was all about the cold war when he doesn't really go up against actual Russians that often? seems like a liberal artist take.

1) you are pretty stupid overall and a terrible curator, see eg: https://jamesbond.fandom.com/wiki/Cold_War#:~:text=Novels,to%20all%20out%20nuclear%20war.

2) the movies back off the direct Russian villian stuff after the early ones because they realize any foreign accent plus a spy with a dry cool wit and Superman capabilities and competence was all that was needed to provide the most comfortable escapism in times when people earnestly contemplated and schools ran drills to prepare for the possibility of a nuclear war.

that's just a thing that boomers say happened that probably stopped by like 1969. Also most of the Films are adaptations of Books. They just don't have a lot of Russian villains outside of SMERSH.
