i volunteer for severely developmentally disabled kids and have witnessed a lot of parents that *really* regret having kids. you rarely see that type of deep regret with ordinary kids. it does happen and i've seen parents that completely ghost their kids once they're 18, and you're right that just because they don't abandon them doesn't mean they don't have deep regret, but i think it's a lot rarer than OP is implying.

I don't think that's true at all. People used to abandon families all the time when you could actually disappear, but there are pretty big legal and social incentives not to do so anymore. Walking out to get cigarettes and never coming back carries a pretty big social stigma and you actually have to pay for it now.

i get a genuine joy out of teaching so i get some similar satisfaction from teaching and mentoring junior colleagues.
