no one controls the rain.

otoh, public policies have an enormous impact on the frequency and severity of fires in California. at long last even portions of the political left have recognized how awful California's fire policies have been for decades.

To anyone who reads this thread in the future: this poast is a great example of fallacious logic. A siren system would reduce neither the frequency nor severity of floods.

it would reduce the severity of floods as measured in deaths. no one cares about the frequency or intensity of floods that don't impact people.

Another example of terrible logic. There is no indication a “siren system” would systemically reduce flooding deaths, nor have had any impact on the most recent flood. This is just a wishful “what if” that assumes perfect implementation and adherence.

Reminder to everyone: warning were sent prior to this flood, directly to people’s phones. They are complaining that the warnings were too late and not intrusive enough to be noticed. These are the true hurdles a warning system has to overcome.

when you shift the discussion to warning systems i can agree with a lot of what you say.

but getting back to the original problem, it is absolutely true that public policies have an enormous impact on the frequency and severity of wildfires and public policies have no similar impact on rainfall. California spent a century suppressing fires in ecosystems that depend on fires. there is a massive backlog of fuel for fires. and although everyone recognizes the need to do far better management there are still almost no controlled burns and thinning is constantly opposed. so, yes, the Dems in CA bear massive blame for fires.

I remember epah's smug response about thinning/clearing out brush that it would just grow back in a year anyways as if that's a hurdle in a city with tremendously valuable real estate and that is also overrun with mexican day laborers who could easily do the job. tbf I never did a 6 month stint as a rural firefighter as part of my mormon mission in 1987 so what the fuck do I know?

that's fine but republican politicians in this area rejected federal money for sirens because it was coming from democrats and because they thought sirens were annoying. the county commissioner, literally a NASA PhD engineer, thought the traditional system of neighbors calling neighbors was sufficient. numerous citizens testified that the communist COVID joe biden mafia would infiltrate the community if they took money for the sirens. so they rejected it and bought police radios instead. the governor wasn't involved in it, the state republican party wasn't involved in it, but it was a republican policy decision made by people greatly influenced by a kind of republican mindset.

look i'm on team individual responsibility here. every adult on that river should have been paying attention and should have been prepared. i'm sure a lot of them saw the warnings and ignored them. the government can't save everyone from an inherently dangerous situation unless they totally prohibit human activity in the area, and i'm not for that. but the local government had a free siren system laid at their feet and they rejected it because blue team bad. in hindsight that looks really fucking stupid and it deserves criticism.

While it’s clearly not entirely Newsome’s or Bass’ fault, they are more at fault for the fires than anyone is for the Texas floods.

The Texas floods were a less-than-once-a-century event, and occurred in an area without significant development. The Palisades fires happen a couple times a decade, and they keep building more houses there. The state’s home insurance program incentivizes people to keep rebuilding. Plus the fire problems are exacerbated by the fire management policies that Newsome definitely does have say over.

The fires in California are far more comparable to Houston flooding, since it’s one of the most regularly flooded cities in America and they keep building the exact same houses back.

leaving the LA reservoirs bone dry was a pretty big fuckup in the wildfire case. it's also very doubtful that the 5 or 6 most expendable ppl in the NWS that were shitcanned would have made much of a difference. likewise even if NWS warning system improvements and local flood prevention improvements were a top 5 priority for Trump from day 1, it's unlikely they'd be in place at this point to have made a difference.

The difference is that the GOP is the party of personal responsibility, so we can be sure that if Republic officials bore any blame for the Texas floods they would simply tell us

The pretense that anyone believes anything they argue is long dead. It's all a messaging game. Oh, a mudslide killed three hikers? Guess the Dems should have thought of that when they claimed to like mud!
