Date: May 23rd, 2026 6:52 AM Author: Only sane guy in the room i think the common knowledge on the matter (in dissident circles, whatever that means at this point) is that no matter what dissidents do with firearms or much of what constitutes truly political violence in general it ends up strengthening the securocracy through their mastery of dissecting and disseminating the breach in the anesthetizing vacuity of this machine existence as, i forget where the discussion of this concept came from, "the event" this place really is just a dismal cradle to grave value extraction machine. the few places in the US that i've been to that aren't like that are under constant image bombardment from the corporate right (fox news blasting portland, north-central california for "homelessness" "crime") or the ultraliberal center (bloomberg reporting on racist opportunistic crime in new mexico, wildlife or disaster intrusions in cascadia or the mountain west), and i suspect that this coverage indeed has an effect on the character of those places from the constructed viewpoint of the observer |

Date: May 23rd, 2026 7:06 AM Author: Only sane guy in the room i agree. it has an actual soul and civic virtue is intentionally ill-defined but ever-present. not much experience with new orleans though. part of it is the arrangement i think; there's a good blend of styles in layout that keeps the various interests separate enough to not lose character or defined structural purpose while still being close and kinetically intelligible enough to not impede movement or transit pittsburgh and philly and the handful of other more midsized truly blue collar cities on the historically white (rooted) parts of the east coast also have some things going on but that's being suffocated by waves of shipping container people buying up the history in the architecture to gracelessly consume. there was organic class consciousness there and the air was was genuinely rough (virile, alive, breathing without assistance) without being unwelcome (as i've heard brooklyn used to be before the real estate coups) also why would you need to defend it petro? we operated on an intellectual credit system here prior to the troubles and your credit is as good as gold at my bank |

Date: May 23rd, 2026 7:21 AM Author: ,.,..,.,..,.,.,.,..,.,.,,..,..,.,,..,.,,. portland, i notice has small little walkable city blocks around its entire core. it was designed from the start as a place to live, rather than a merchant's 'plat.' platting was the generic process in the 1800's by which unseen speculative land in the US was divvied up by investors.
most platters went for longer blocks so that buyers would have a big chunk of street-front per plat. portland said "fuck you; small blocks for more corners." if you wanted more street-front, you'd have to buy more parcels.
this was a top-down dictatorial edict from its new england founders, directly contradicting the entire notion of the 'frontier' and the 'range' and the 'open' west. and it ended up making sense, because no one is doing any ranching in portland.
and that carried through the centuries. the whole notion of an 'urban growth boundary' comes from 1600's/1700's america; not the current version. you build what can be seen and walked and defended, and the outer bounds will house the spirits and animals and wilder tribes. |
