I am amused. When I posted in May on my blog about "cutting the chain" and leaving MarketWatch, it finally hit home what that post meant. I was writing it to myself to read it 5 months later. I will say it is a great free website to conduct social experiments and find out who has love and who is filled with hate. For some reason it really pisses me off when people who don't work in financial services call everyone who does a "bankster." 'm flying to Zurich tonight out of Miami International to meet with a perspective client. Looking to build a partnership for investing his funds and possibly local economic development it is an exciting time in my life.
I get to revisit one of the world's most beautiful countries, Switzerland. While I plan on taking in the sights and sounds, I don't take such responsibility bestowed upon me lightly. I've got a job to do and I intend on closing this deal. With the full faith of my boss and faith in myself, I am finding something sacred in a vilified industry. The fact that we can all still make a difference in the lives of others.
I'll get more "real world" experience that will help me in my quest for writing my doctoral dissertation about the markets and morality. Just one more experience to help understand life behind the statistics, the rhyme behind the reason. Unlike just learning from a textbook and sitting in class... this is the real thing. As the world nears social unrest and riots it's all about finding something sacred.
With one last heartfelt hug and kiss for Chris after meeting for lunch, a smile from my boss and an endorsement of "go get em' tiger," I'm off to take the plunge into the scary world of international business, except this time, there will be no dad to back me up. I have ambivalent views about it all now. Was it really worth all that time? Did I really make people smile? Did they appreciate my witty jokes, and pointed satire? Did people actually appreciate my postings or just giving out a "thumbs up" for my mug shot? I hope it was for the content and not just my pretty face. I hope I left a small legacy. I hope I had some people saying just wow the girl really can study and party and spend every Saturday attending the church of Bobby Bowden at Doak Campbell Stadium and still get the "big picture."

Recently, I gave a speech about the economic outlook regarding the Baltimore metropolitan area. I focused on local community development and mentoring the black community who are without caring parents. It was an awkward feeling. Standing in front of 110 businessmen and women who hold immense power over the reins of America's economy. At the age of 24 what could I possibly say to these people? How could I sway their opinion and get them to pour their heart and soul into localized development when I haven't had all that much job experience? Working at Hooters, on marketing campaigns, accounting, small business, and high finance I don't consider as having much experience at all.
Nevertheless, I gave my speech and sat back down as the next speaker got up and got their 15 minutes of fame. Afterwords, a businessman (who serves on the board of directors of a multinational corporation) came up and complemented me on my speech. It obviously hit home for him. His words have been playing in my mind ever since. "Lauren that was a great speech. You didn’t just attempt, you soared. You didn't just lull us to sleep with rhetoric, you awoke the childlike wonder inside of us. You didn’t just inspire with you determination, you thrilled with you grace, poise and ability. You managed to take a simple concept and passionately urge big businesses to do their part. (He chuckled and added more so than President Obama ever could) Your outlook on life -- the way we are suppose to live -- is infectious. If you ever need a job after you graduate, here is my card. Feel free to call us at anytime."
What a complement! Never before in my life had a person whom I had just met and shook hands with speak so highly of me. I'm not sure if it was my looks and bubbly personality of carasmatic charm that my father speaks about all the time, but something clicked. |

Coming home after suffering a market bashing is not fun. Opening the door with tear stained eyes only to find the dog has crapped all over the tile or raided the trash is not fun. But it is life itself. We are suppose to be happy. We are suppose to be wild and free and laugh until snot comes out our nose or burp really loudly after shotgunning a beer. We're suppose to live for the mental Kodak moments in life like falling down the stairs or out of the chair only to be pounced on by the dog and snouted in the face as he slobbers all over you until you roll over and laugh until tears run down your face.
And as of late it's just not happening. America is mentally depressed. But it is my fervent belief that everything happens for a reason. We have to keep on walking. Often times we walk in the dark as we "walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7). No one ever said it was going to be easy. And many times you just have to cry in the shower and scream out loud "Why God...? Why!?"
Even today, when we want to hate those in government or worse, wish death upon them, we cannot wish them dead, maybe out of office but not dead. Romans 12:19 says, "Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord." |

And here I sit. Tears running down my face, crying. Never would I have imagined a simple blog post about the passing of Apple CEO Steve Jobs posted on this blog (HERE) and on Facebook would spark the rage of a Duke University graduate and a current Georgetown student. He picked and ripped apart my quirky southern writing, my cynical views of the world, my appearance, my marriage, and my friends. He passed judgement, demonized my way of life, denounced my accomplishments, and assumed I went the slut way to get ahead.
I was flooded with over 5,000 page views in 24 hours, far surpassing the usual 4,000 a month I get. They called me crazy, a whore, a "glorified sales bitch." I was mocked for my belief in God. They called me stupid, dumb, a pathetic joke... and maybe I am. But what I don't understand is the hate, the rage, the indignation of this Duke University graduate and the others who have taken part in completely making fun of everything about me and my personal blog. I get it, just a dumb blonde...
I was made fun of for hanging about "black gangsters" meeting the likes of Ray Lewis, Marcus Allen and Tim Brown, all of whom are great football players but even better men. I was mocked for not following a particular ideology. Not a democrat or a republican but for supporting some of both political parties. Even my status updates on Facebook were ridiculed, my humor misunderstood, my "treasure trove" of 2 line "darkest before the dawn" thought brutally laughed at. But it was never about garnering that kind of audience, the one that only wishes to leave hateful comments, on anonymous message boards.
It annoyed me. It irritated me. And finally I've just thrown my hands up and sit here with tears running down my face. I was considering deleting the entire blog and starting over. Because nothing I say or do will ever win the approval of someone whom I've never personally met. And I've always been a sunny-side-of-life girl, even if I don't agree with a view point I'm not going to hate (although my writing comes off as such).
I was even told to get all my musings about life and put them into Halmark cards to bring some joy into life, although they mocked me for just being a complete idiot, truly a paradox. |

Boehner called for a new era of change in Washington, saying it was time to roll up their sleeves. Pledging to America that the peoples agenda would be their agenda, I was highly skeptical. But as the speech progressed I knew he meant every heartfelt word. When Boehner was ending his speech, you could literally see his often collected, calm, and confident demeanor cracking under the raw emotion of the situation. And when he began talking about the chasing the American Dream, genuine tears of joy flowed. Touching a raw nerve within me, it was clearly a BEAUTIFUL sight to see a grown man not afraid to cry. In that final two minutes, John Boehner accomplished what President Obama never could: he dedicated himself to the America people.
You could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes. I have a new cautiously optimistic vibe and a new-found sense of respect for John Boehner. Not because he cried on national TV and meant it, but because I believe he is willing to serve the American people. Putting the common good before individual glory. Knowing what it truly means to accomplish the American Dream. Knowing that the time is now to act to save this once great nation from collapse. And it's a beautiful thing, isn't it? I believe it is. When the new Congress becomes unconditionally dedicated to pouring their collective heart and soul into helping solve our problems, with the American people, America will cry tears of joy with Rep. Boehner. And it will truly be worthy of celebration.
When our elected representatives in the Congress stop the favored deals to special interests and reigns in Wall Street's excessive power, true freedom will be reached. When the average person on the street realizes that for the first time, in a long time, America demands so much more, and we all pitch in, we will reach our destination. But it is a long road, and a painstaking endeavor not for the faith of heart. If we truly want to celebrate economic freedom and prosperity, we stand united as one against Wall Street, corrupt multinationals and the schemes that do not put America first. For country.
