The final collapse of all morals is intimately linked to the collapse of institutions and of the state itself. Posting about the impossibility of "hunger" ("there's no hunger; there are only hungry people") when "chubby-cheeked mothers" are holding emaciated children ("she must have taken his food") is the result of civil protests focusing on Netanyahu and his government without mentioning the hunger or the genocide even once. A society where everything is personal (which is what the hostages are now, as well) is a society incapable of maintaining institutions setting a principled path. There are no principles.

The broad consensus underpinning this implosion is, I think, expanding. The images from Gaza have rattled something very deep in the collective Israeli-Jewish soul, and it isn't compassion. The Palestinians, expiring so flamboyantly, appear to be suggesting two impossible things:

1. Jews can perpetrate a genocide.

2. There can be two societies who suffered genocide between the river and the sea.

That is impossible. Not only does it shatter our perennial victimhood; it shatters our uniqueness. Like the Highlander, there can be only one. If there isn't only one society that deserves it all, full victimhood and full aggression, there can be none. That is what enforces the consensus among Israelis and enables Israel's descent into hell."
