The other factor that is drastically underappreciated is how not only normal but encouraged/coached/celebrated it was in 70s-90s football to have dudes lead with their head, target other players’ heads and play concussed. We seem to be in a similar place with CTE and football as we are with cigarettes ie everyone recalibrated to a level of risk that corresponded to a social norm of smoking 2 packs a day and in that context it became socially unacceptable to make mention of the fact that the effect of smoking 2 packs a month is negligible and potentially positive relative to alternatives for orally fixated people like overeating. |
