It's important because people pick an album or two consecutive albums that had 1-2 great songs on it and they go, well, that means that the whole album is great or that contiguous career arc is great. Take Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust. Perfect example. They both have great songs on the record. But they're not great records. So people like you come to me and say hey doesn't the fact that he put out two great records mean he has ten great songs? But no. Just because an album is historically significant doesn't mean all the songs are great. Take U2 - War. It has two legendary songs and all the rest are trash. But that only counts as two. So I am just adding it all up like a math equation.
Now some bands like The Beatles they might get points for Rubber Soul or Revolver or something because they were all good. My whole point is that only a small handful of bands ever have put out even 1 record with no skips. Just my opinion. Dark Side, Led Zeppelin IV. Only a few of these exist. But a lot of bands the album is famous because it had a mega hit like Life on Mars or something. Bowie had an abysmal ratio so you have to count it up by hand. |

I actually absolutely adore several boomer rock bands. I think what they achieved is absolutely mind blowing. What bugs me are the boomers who won't shut up about shit like Creedence and Jimmy Buffet, and if you're Gen X, The Police. Like OK it's fine whatever. But they talk about some of these butt rock bands like it's amazing and when they die no one will ever listen to Fortune Son or Margaritaville ever again.
My second issue with boomer rock fans is that they completely hate on alternative. There was this entire genre that was super popular and everyone in our generation grew up on it and not 1 boomer anywhere in the world has ever heard Come As You Are or Linkin Park - Crawling. It's just the complete disdain for modern shit they have is nauseating. They're missing a whole world of great music and they dump on it constantly because their 1950s brains can't process it. |

Green Day was an absolute tune making hit factory that produced banger after banger. I'm not even that much of a Green Day fan. It's a little too poppy for me. But they have two dozen songs everyone in the world recognizes and can name after hearing only the first five seconds of it. Facts. I probably enjoy Bowie more though.

the above is why the thread should be entitled "HAtp tells you (in yes/no format) whether he likes bands/musical artists." however, fewer people would probably engage with that, so he draws us in with the promise of some objective discussion of whether an artist is "good," which is kind of an impossible task to begin with. |
