Pet theory is that the beginning of the end of the West can be attributed to its greatest achievement, the rise of the dominant middle class.

The old aristocracy + working class had a codependency that prioritized an identity that included faith and tradition and cultural resonance. The middle classes destroyed it. Europe is a good example of self destruction through middle class liberalism unrestrained by aristocratic or working class restraint that understood the real value of cultural identity.

Even WWI is connected to this theory as it marked the end of aristocratic rule, leaving behind mediocre middle class leaders to reshape the continent. The working classes kept the middle class under control in the postwar years, but by the 70s the middle class were becoming the majority and the working class influence faded, sharply in the 1990s. And unrestrained by both forces, just see how the continent has changed so quickly in such a short time period. As someone commented to me, both the old aristocracy and the old working classes would have had no problems turning the guns on the migrant boats.

My take is that the most prominent symbol of the downturn was Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. I can see how that thing alone could inspire reformation just a couple of years later, then the Thirty Years' War, then the Westphalia Peace that actually started this current thing where you are not supposed to base your actions in politics on what you actually believe - doing so became the only sin.

The biggest thing that comes to mind for me is the invention (and launch) of the birth control pill. Without birth control, no amount of other tech could be as ruinous to the west IMO.

Sexual revolution/the uncontrolled Great Unraveling of the late 60s and early 70s

JFK assassination was also up there but more just as something emblematic of the times in which it took place
