My last 3 rounds I shot 40s on front 9 and 50s on back 9

Should I just become a 9-hole specialist?

playing a ton of 9 hole rounds is a great way to build a handicap you don't actually play to. it's much easier to burst energy a good 9-hole score vs. putting it together for a full 18.

cr. I have no idea how that shit works. I do know I have a bunch of low 9 hole rounds that I am pretty sure are pushing down my handicap and it fucks me over in 18 hole games.

basically if you have a 9-hole round, no matter how good, it just defaults your differential to near your handicap.

so if you're a 25 handicap and shoot a +4, you'll still end up with a differential close to 25 (instead of 8)

fuck my ass. that doesn't seem right. I had a handful of really low 9-hole scores that I had thought were pushing my index down.

the 36 below has a 4.1 differential. clearly it does push up 9 hole rounds vs 18.

Mentally it definitely feels more tedious, like is this really how I should be spending my time. The time waiting to hit builds up and I'm wondering where is the cart girl

Also my phone is usually blowing up around then from ignoring calls all morning

turn off the phone. develop a consistent pre-shot routine that focuses as much on clearing the mind as on shot mechanica.

I'm usually better on the back, largely because I'll sort of figure out what my ball is doing that day or make some small adjustments.

I have had a few rounds this year where I had a great start and then fucked it up on the back. Probably a bit of a psychological thing where I feel pressure to break 80 or post a good score.

Choked on the back again Saturday.

39 on the front (+3), par on 10, birdie on 11 after driving it just through the green on short par 4.

+2 through 11.

Ended up with an 81 (39-42) playing the last 7 holes at +7 after a triple on 12 and double on 18.

don't think about your score (i.e. - if I can just par out these last few I'll shoot 73 or whatever). easier said than done.

A lot of it is mental and allowing yourself to believe you can shoot a certain number. A few years ago I was -6 through 12 in a tournament and ended up shooting even par 72. Doh!

Had another 81 last weekend that should have been ~75-76 but for some truly awful putting. Lipped out uphill birdie putts from 4 feet and 2.5 feet. 4 putt double from above a front pin off the green and down a false front 30 yards down the fairway. 38 putts total and only made 1 putt over 4 feet all day.

Ball striking was really solid though. 9/13 fairways, 10/18 greens (and on in reg+1 the other 8 greens), only one penalty. Just need to score.

Brutal putting, but that's golf for you. I think I've had days where I hit 15 greens and shot 80. I had 43 putts in a tournament once.

But keep striking it well and you'll eventually start going low. Just a matter of time.

What was your penalty?

Do you drop and take 2 if you lose your ball (not ob) or might have hit ob but don't see white stakes?

I noticed everyone around me was dropping and taking 1 all the time. Or if they lost their drive and don't take a provisional, they drop on the fairway and take 3 instead of 4.

This is why I find comparing golf scores useless at mid to high handicaps

It was a properly scored penalty. Hit my second into red staked brush/swamp area greenside on a par 5. Took 1 stroke penalty with a drop at point of entry no closer to hole. Pitched on and made par, fortunately.

I generally respect OB and rehit/play a provisional. Never drop from the fairway unless it's within 2 club lengths from point of entry into a hazard (or on line playing backwards from pin).

Ocasionally will play a ball lost into the woods as if it were a lateral hazard and just 1-stroke penalty drop from point of entry if I didn't hit a provisional, thought it would be in play (i.e. usually from the rough at the edge of the shit)

I still can't wrap my head around hitting into water hazards (+1)is better than hitting safely away from a pond but >50% chance of going out / lost on the other side of green
