Have never been to Miami and am not a beach person.
Current job is $400K regional Biglaw in a mid-sized city. Have a solid set up here with wife’s family nearby.
Would cost 2.5X our current house to get a decent house in decent neighborhood in Miami it seems. Probably 3.5X to get something that really matches the same house size we have here.
Anyone want to talk me into or out of taking the job? The job would be quasi legal and get me onto the business side.

How old are your kids?
How much do your in-laws help?
Do you like practicing law?

6 and 3.
Don’t like doing time entries but don’t have it all that bad. I do work in a niche area that is likely to decline in the short to medium term, so need to pivot a bit to keep it going in law (have laid out some feelers there and it’s doable but not a slam dunk).
In-laws babysit a lot. Not indispensable but would hate to lose them and my wife wouldn’t like it either. Unlikely (but not a certain no) that they’d move with us.

if it was $400k and easy street job for as long as you need, you'd be crazy to uproot for family.
Family is the most important thing brother. Moving to Miami will take your kids and wife away from extended family. They won't grow up with them around and instead see them probably a couple times per year.
You and your wife are going to be more stressed in a new city without any help and you starting a new job. This will likely strain your marriage.
IME it's not worth it for a couple extra bucks when you already make a very nice living. I mean 50% raise (maybe more if your current state has an income tax) is a good amount, so maybe im minimizing that a bit.
However, if you hate what you do and need to transition for your career or mental health, then sure consider taking the job especially if you think your marriage can handle it. Your kids are young enough to adjust.

I would find this very tempting, but if you’re getting material help from the nearby family then you have to take into account the non-financial impact on your QOL.
House size is a stupid metric. People live in too large of homes as it is. If you could get a smaller place in a nice walkable neighborhood where your kids could grow up with some freedom of movement, that’d easily offset the big suburban backyard or whatever. But hard to really judge this without knowing your price point and the commute situation.
Is the money basically guaranteed? Or are you putting a bunch at risk in RSUs or other deferred dollars?

Fair points on house size. I’m in a true suburb now so something more walkable could be cool and we’d still be able to get enough house. Even in this suburb though, kids always ride their bikes and stuff around the neighborhood.
I still have family visit a lot and would if I moved so it’d be important to have an extra room for them.
The offer was informally made by my former boss who is high up at the company but given my past with him I’m entirely confident he’d deliver on comp.

It sounds like op has some niche skill so it’s possibly not that likely he’d get laid off bc even if the company gets slow, they have that need and the alternative is hiring a firm, which will be way more expensive.
All lawyers at firms with no book (excluding year 1-7 associates) are targets. Things get slow and they’re det.

This isn't even close: Stay where you are. You can hunt for jobs that have more to offer than this if you want to.
What are the upsides of moving? 1/3 of that additional salary is going to taxes. And it sounds like the rest (or more) would go to increased housing and child care costs.
No guarantees that the grass is really greener, that you'd still want this new job in a year, or that they'd still want you.
Being near family and in a place where your kids, your wife, and you have and are further developing roots is 180.

Seriously, buy a plane ticket for this weekend for your family and go. Watch some YouTube videos. Consider the weather and whether that appeals for you or if you will hate it. Think about where you would live in the city. Go see it when you visit.
I will also note that leaving biglaw for a really nice in-house job paying that much is NOT common. In fact, in-house jobs paying that aren't common at all.
I'm also an in-housemo in Florida that loves it along with a wife who does the same thing. But I have met people in-house that prefer biglaw. Seems bizarre to me but people have different personalities. Just think about what will make you and your family happy and what will make you guys miserable. No point in choosing misery over happiness.

This new job would have hours little better and perhaps worse than my current job. The guy I’d be working for is swamped and they are in heavy expansion and acquisition mode.
I’ve spent most of my career in-house and think I prefer it to Biglaw. The guy offering me the job is my former boss who I split ways with 5 years ago. But, for former in-house gigs were very cushy, I don’t think this would be.
My wife is very against the potential move. She thinks if we stay here even if I get laid off in a few years we’d still have our cheap house here and ample savings but she also orders shitloads of crap from Amazon so who knows.

Pretty much every major city has a shitty ghetto area. Miami is less scary than say, Detroit, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, Chicago, LA, SF, NOLA, etc. ghetto areas. And OP can effectively avoid Miami's ghetto.

Any thoughts on Pinecrest? Seemed expensive but maybe doable. Looked like the sort of place we could like. Have no idea about schools nearby.
Mind not made up yet and check in with the offerer isn’t for a few weeks so plenty of time to change my mind 5 more times but probably leaning against taking it at the moment.
You’re right they spending a weekend exploring with my wife would be a great idea before turning it down.

Ok, so I'm going to teach you how to approach neighborhoods in Miami. It isn't just a question of "are the houses nice and can you afford them." The first question is "who lives there and would I be happy living with them?" First thing you do is pull up the demographic info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinecrest,_Florida
White is under 40% and Latino is about 50%. By comparison Coconut Grove is about 60% white and 35% Latino. Surfside is similar to Coconut Grove. Because it is Miami, every neighborhood will have a lot of Latinos but the question is how do you feel about them being the majority to the extent that people will speak Spanish to you by default? I will note that there are some neighborhoods where it is exclusively Spanish. My favorite dog park in the area is Perrine Wayside Dog Park. It has a cute lake in the middle, a lot of large dogs and are tolerant of pretty much all breeds. XOers would hate it. But that entire area is "hablo no ingles" even if people in the dog park mostly speak english. We used to go and grab a snack at a place nearby and absolutely zero english. Had to order entirely en espanol. In that respect you have to understand that parts of Miami basically aren't the US at all.
Another thing to consider: this is true of all of Florida, but the farther you are from the ocean the hotter it is. The water has a cooling effect and you desperately need that. Even if you personally don't care about the beach that is an important consideration.

Are you Jewish?
You'll love it there or SurfSide/Sunny Isles or Aventura
If you want urban bullshit avoid Brickell and check out Wynwood or Midtown/Fashion district area
Again Miami is 100% SPS so caveat emptor
i wouldnt move back there unless it was to stay on Venetian away from everyone

Need more context re inhouse job and how safe it is. In general people in this thread are overrating grandparents, but they are potentially worth more than the comp difference. Factors to consider: 1) they are by far the most useful 0-5 ages, and you’re almost out of that territory. We have both sets of grandparents close and an aunt but still opt for a sitter anytime we know kids need to be in bed at a reasonable hour bc our family will let them stay up until midnight and eat a bunch of junk. There’s always a detox period when they come back from their grandparents. 2) grandparents can travel to you way more easily until they’re 80+, especially if you buy their plane tickets, and most old people love Florida. Seems completely plausible that you could work it out that they come for long visits and you still get 2+ months of quality time every year when you’re actually focused on them and their visit. 3) if your parents that’s one thing, but if it’s your wife’s parents and they make her crazy, have health issues, have dumb ideas about how to parent and look after kids (see also 1)) then they can be a net negative in purely selfish terms. It might still be important to you and wife to be present and help eg when there are major medical decisions happening, but you can easily end up in a sandwich generation trap when your kids are older and you’ll find yourself ordering take out 3x a week while your wife devotes 99% of her mental energy to her sick mom or whatever. 4) there are grandparents and then there are grandparents. You have to be honest with yourselves about how much these grandparents actually want to be a meaningful presence in your kids lives as they get older or if it’s just fun at this stage when they’re cute and young, but come 5-7 years from now it will be less common that they’re offering to babysit and more common that they’re booming your/your wife’s inheritance away on cruises and euro vacations or whatever. All that said, a truly 180 set of grandparents close is worth far more than 200k a year.
