I agree that, all things being equal, NJ is not a desirable place to live. Shitty weather, no good cities, rude people, high taxes.
I have roots in NJ and literally all of my family is here. For anyone else it doesn't really make a lot of sense. I guess if you work in pharma, there are a lot of opportunities in-state, but that's pretty much it.

It's got proximity to a lot of things.
Not sure I'd include "mountains" as a NJ quality. Mt. Creek is some of the shittiest skiing on the east coast.
I honestly hate going to NYC and haven't been there in years.
There are nice towns in that they have good schools and are safe, but very few if any are worth visiting. And to live in any of the "nice towns" a 3 bedroom shack on a small lot will run you >$1M with a $20k/year tax bill.
Beaches, yes. I love the jersey shore.

the water park kind of sucks now though i think they're re-opening some of the old attractions.
last time i went, half the park was closed and it was jam packed. we had to wait like an hour to go down 1 shitty waterslide.
the skiing is terrible. super crowded and a sheet of ice.

I’m an elitist NY’er and all my friends are too. The only places I’m aware of in NJ that are acceptable to live are:
1. Summit
2. Chatham
3. Demarest
4. Rumson (if you take the boat to FiDi)
5. Princeton
6. Alpine (though too new money/“bling bling”)
7. Saddle River/Upper Saddle River
