another thing is most lawyers are reasonably smart enough to achieve upper class status, but they are ridiculously lacking in imagination and creativity so the best thing they can think of is to toil in biglaw for 2 years to pay off the debt and resign to their middle class fate.

I'm not so sure. Many people who end up doing well at top law schools might have the most potential in a field like the law. Maybe the people who succeed the most are those who are most able to endure working long hours doing relatively monotonous work in a stressful profession.
