Hey guys! I see that our use of TLS to screen out undesirable instructor applicants has created quite a stir. When an instructor applicant makes posts on pre-law discussion boards attempting to game our interview process, we view that as a sign of bad character. Yesterday "John" started a thread under the screen name “XXXXXXXX” seeking information that he thought would help him give the "right" responses during the interview. After he received my email, he deleted the thread (in which he claimed that TestMasters techniques were "TTT") and called me claiming that he was "confused" by my email and denying he had ever posted anything on TLS. I told him the email was self-explanatory and the conversation ended right away.
I'm sure some of you will get a kick out of the email he sent me later that afternoon:
Dear Irina,
I am confused by this email and I was even more confused by your conduct when I called you to ask about it. I didn't expect such rudeness and condescension from an administrative assistant, especially one who contacted me for an interview.
Although you are no longer interested in interviewing me, and I am no longer interested in working for a company that employs people who lack basic social skills, I think my Catholic upbringing requires me to offer you some advice: When dealing with people, it's important to be tactful and respectful at all times. Aside from being the right thing to do, it is impossible to know when you may run into someone or need their help in the future. This is a lesson my parents taught me, which with you being raised by wolves, I assume wasn't imparted to you. Thank you for your time and I wish you the best.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXX
To be clear, I am the Programs Director at TM. My job is to ensure that our LSAT classes run properly and that our students and instructors are happy. I also serve as the point of contact for LSAT instructor applicants.
Oh, and "John" has a real name too, just like me. :)
Irina

"We have decided to cancel your interview and reject your application to work for us as an LSAT instructor. Applications are currently at an all-time high, and we do not have the time or resources to interview TTT candidates whose social lives consist of making thousands of posts on internet discussion boards. TestMasters only hires people who are cool, and unfortunately you do not meet that requirement."

There's nothing unfair about what Testmasters does.
And they're free to reject applicants for seeking information about a confidential interview process.
The objectionable thing is the way the employee handled the situation, which is what people focused on. Hopefully someone will bring this to her supervisors' attention.

Confidential interview process? People prepare for interviews all the time. Consulting gigs post sample questions. Career services lists all kinds of shit.
How is preparing for an interview any different than preparing for a test?
And imo, while what testmasters does is perfectly legal and acceptable, at the end of the day it creates unfair advantages for those who can afford test prep and somewhat defeats the purpose of a "standardized" test.

Well I'm assuming they don't want people talking about their interviews, since the woman responded the way she did. So they're not like consulting companies that post sample questions or provide guides to career services offices.
"defeats the purpose of a "standardized" test."
Depends on how good the standardized test is at testing the skills it's designed to assess. For example, suppose a job requires people to have excellent mental math skills and makes applicants take a mental math test. Some private company has developed an expensive course that improves people's mental math skills significantly. People who can afford the course are at an advantage (whether the advantage is "fair" or not is debatable), but the test will still serve its purpose of finding candidates with strong mental math skills.

"Well I'm assuming they don't want people talking about their interviews, since the woman responded the way she did."
Unless they specifically said not to discuss, which I'm assuming since the woman didn't mention it, they would have to be dumbasses to think people wouldn't prep for it or that they would want people who wouldn't prep for it.
" For example, suppose a job requires people to have excellent mental math skills and makes applicants take a mental math test. "
If you really think taking text masters makes people more intelligent and anything but slightly better at logical thinking you're a dumbass. It teaches them tricks on how to answer specific types of questions that they were too dumb figure out on their own.

"If it improves students' LR and RC scores, it makes them better at reading complicated text quickly."
No. It makes them like 60% at LSAT problems because they've seen so many and recognize the patterns. It would make them at best 2% better at reading other complicated texts and about 1% better at reading something like War and Peace.
Playing Mario Kart improves your working memory too, but if you practice you're going to get much better at Mario Kart and improve your working memory almost nil.

just reading the introduction to this article gives you an impression of TM's culture, i.e. Robin.
"Robin Singh has had a brutal week: His students have just received their scores from the recent Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and Singh has been providing emotional first aid, restoring bruised egos and fractured dreams of legal preeminence. But on this Saturday night, at the W Hotel in L.A., he's lounging--bottle-service style--with his TestMasters employees. In his torn jeans and loose suede shirt, surrounded by a dozen twentysomethings in floral button-downs and supersized belt buckles, the 38-year-old Singh doesn't come off as a standardized-test coach who has made millions teaching four-variable logic problems. He looks like a headliner at the Viper Room--and seems pretty happy with his own performance.
Singh takes a slug of Johnnie Walker Blue Label and, in a conspiratorial aside says, "Kaplan's up to something." Kaplan is the industry monster, a national test-prep juggernaut known to every high-school senior (SAT), would-be grad student (GRE), and aspiring lawyer (LSAT) in the country. Kaplan also happens to be a Singh rival--and his former employer. So when Singh says Kaplan is up to something, it probably means Singh's up to something, too."
