- believes career statistics from schools

- always graduated in top quarter of class before

- family pressure (law school pays off son)

I think #2 holds most water.....I'm not sure anyone who's done any due dilligence actually places faith in those employment numbers. Family pressure may be credited, too.

You would be surprised.

About a month and a half ago I toured a prospective student around my LS as a favor to a friend who had moved away.

I had to explain to this guy that schools lie about employment stats and had to explain the methods they use to deceive students.

d00d went to an elite undergraduate school and he was clueless.

I'm sure they are lured in by the BS salary information on the school website.

For example: NYLS

45.7% of graduates are in private practice. Their median salary is $160,000.

Many people don't read the fine print about the % of reporting graduates, think "I have a 50% chance of making $160k a year," and decide to enroll.

is this to say that .45 x .25 (% reporting) = ~12.5% actually made BigLaw?

there's also a misunderstanding of the term "median salary"-

that number is the most frequently reported salary. So even at a place like NYLS, if 10 people in the entire class get BigLaw, they will all report that round number ($160k), and it will be the "median"- even though 100 other people in "private practice" are making much lesser amounts.

No, you are thinking of the "mode salary."

The median salary is supposedly the salary in the exact middle of all students.

With this in mind, it appears that NYLS is simply lying about their Biglaw stats, as I don't think even 5% of the class got those jobs.

I believe you are technically correct, but nevertheless, when law schools report their "median salary," that is in fact what they are reporting. I seem to remember reading a footnote about this on a T2's webpage when I was applying to law school.

The very top of the class gets BigLaw. Maybe top <5 %. Almost every v100 in NYC a NYLS grad or too.

My understanding is that it used to be a halfway decent school decades ago (so maybe there is a strong alumni base)

True. My buddy was barely above median at the only law school in the state. That plus connections landed him 50k at a place with 1600 billables. Partners making 250k

pre ITE one could hope to graduate from a TTT and get a small law/shitlaw gig but now lower T1 grads are fighting tooth and nail for those positions.

A guy I know just started at Fordham, and he's paying for it. When he told me that he picked Fordham (over money from other, lower ranked schools), I instinctively blurted out, "Congratulations." What I meat to say was, "Dear God, why?"
