Up 5-1 (and 2 sets to none) and then losing effectively every game for three straight sets is perhaps the greatest collapse in the history of tennis. Guess he forgot to use his special juice before the match.

it's certainly up there, though would be more epic in a later round.

I'm not even really sure what comes close. Obviously Federer has multiple 40-15 match point service games that he's lost, but they were against Djokovic whose level raised higher. Not being able to serve out the match with multiple service games and breaks is insane.

yeah, losing match points in a close match against a tough opponent may be a choke, but it isn't an epic meltdown.

usually when people choke, they at least make some effort to come back. like, gaudio choked the RG final vs coria but then still made it an 8-6 final set

the novotna final has to be up there, too

Nadal's lost to Soderling in 2009 is a bigger upset for a number of obvious reasons. But this is a much bigger chokejob. World historic.

yep, plenty of bigger upsets in tennis history from a statistical perspective.

the world historic chokejob here is a complete unraveling. losing 18 straight points, etc.

LOW ENERGY YANNIK

Sinner met the press at #RolandGarros, tried to explain what happened...

"I didn't feel very well on court, but it can happen. I was in a good spot, also third set. I couldn't serve it out. Then struggled quite a bit. Congrats to him. I don't want to take anything away from him. He played a very solid match, especially also in the end"

"I struggled, starting to feel very dizzy. Very low of energy. Tried to serve it out, but didn't have a lot of energy. Fourth set, I let it go a little bit trying to have a bit more energy in the fifth. Very important game the first one. Couldn't hold. Then it went a bit downwards."

"Even though I was playing some great tennis, but really couldn't find any energy today. It was a tough spot to be in. But, again, this is the sport. It was warm, but not crazy warm. I feel like it was quite okay to play. Really it was nothing against the heat, nothing against the weather. It was just me today, but it happens."
