Credentialism is losing its cache. Better to have a good personality and make connections in local town, USA.

It isn't really losing it's cache, but obviously you cannot do what I described without the 2 (arguable more important) things you mention: personality and connections

Of course it's losing its cache. 5 years ago people still though you should get any BA and good grades to profit!!! 2 years ago people still thought get a law degree to profit!!! Now? Nobody thinks either of those stupid ideas, and non-science higher education is increasingly viewed as a ripoff scheme.

Oh I was exclusively referring to credentials as they relate to local politics in cerTTTain areas. Everything you said is true, I agree, except that viewpoint is vastly limited in the general population.

Maybe. So you're saying, outside of Blue states, that an HYS degree helps someone running for office? I would suggest there is a major real America : lefty Utopia divide on this issue.

It doesn't have the cache that, say, a Rhodes Scholarship does, but it's up there

the reason HYS degrees are valuable is that they guarantee the person is literate, hardworking, and of above average intelligence. no one wants to elect someone who doesn't know the difference between cache and cachet. lulz

HA. Well done. That said, non-XOers would surely forgive forgetting a "t" on a french word.

The other guy also forgot the t, so who is it that is unelectable, Mr. Kerry?

They'd forgive it in their drinking partners, but probably not in their gov't representatives. Wait, Sarah Palin and George Bush were very popular in are country. Nevermind.

1. Go to UG, major in poli sci, intern with local pols, join local political organizations, get involved in fundraising, campaigning, meet and establish connections with local kingmakers/big donors/business leaders

2. Go to HYS, spend most of time working on local pol campaigns, spend LS summers in hometown district working on various campaigns, continuing with fund raising and getting your name out there.

3. As LS draws to a close, get the ball rolling on petitioning for your name on a primary ballot. Work on fundraising, establish base, work on public speaking.

4. Return to hometown and take heroic job - community college teacher, local TTT LS adjunct, public defender, "community organizing" a la Barack Obama, etc.,

5. Run a successful primary campaign

6. Get elected to office

I mean, Feingold may have had some overkill when he took a Rhodes Scholarship in addition to UW-Madison --> HLS, but think it worked out well for him.

(Herb Kohl also did UW-Madison --> HBS, fwiw.)
