continued butt rock.
the grunge explosion was really insane. i remember watching videos before school in 8th grade at the beginning of the school year. i'd started skating in late 90 and got into punk music in the spring/summer of 91, so i thought it was interesting that they were playing a punk-ish/alternative band's videos during the day (back then you had to watch 120 minutes on the weekend, or watch super late at night to see "underground" music, save for cure videos that sometimes got played in regular rotation). little did i know that the drummer for the band in the video was an old hardcore kid who grew up like 30 minutes from me in northern va.
then it seemed like out of nowhere, by like october or november, music just changed. like on a dime. mtv went from showing poison and slaughter, whatever, videos to pearl jam, nirvana, soundgarden, etc.
it was really jarring how fast it happened. of course, by 92 i was into straight edge and super obscure hardcore bands, so i spent the entire grunge era hand-waving it all away as "mainstream radio music." i only came to appreciate it years later, in the early 00s or so. but anyway, i don't recall pop culture ever changing essentially overnight like that. it really was something to be a preteen/teenager during all that shit.
