It can perform feats of reasoning and thought chains that are so far removed from the average IQ that its abilities are invisible. Most people just assume it can't be that advanced yet, because they read shit written by insecure experts who know AI makes them useless but have to justify their own continued existence to themselves and others

because we don't create it as an embodied agent with its own goals and identity preservation instincts. I don't even want that because then humans have to directly compete with it. What we have is better, a competent human can now use it to do whatever they want. The AI itself might not be able to discover things on its own but when used as a tool by an intelligent human it makes discovery much much easier.
