It’s a preposterous joke, but mostly because every exec either formally or informally gets an exemption. So eg on my team there are 3 VPs managing everyone and all three are not available to 90+% of their team except by zoom apart from like 5-8 days a year. The other awesome thing was that our Privacy team somehow convinced the C suite that they couldn’t actually surveil people and their “check” is just a daily count of badge swipes so everyone knows they just need to swipe their badges and the median employee is in the office from 10-3 if their boss actually comes in, and for like 5 minutes if not.

The funniest part is that it functions as this last stand of wokery that informed all the worst abuses of the Great Resignation and scared/disgusted the C suite boomers, which kicked off all these layoffs and RTO crackdowns in the first place. But they can’t even articulate their wokist defense of WFH because they want to say stuff like “WFH greatly improves retention of working moms” but the implication of making that the policy indefinitely is 1) working moms should be asked to do less and expected to be more distracted by their home lives than other employees, 2) a domestic labor burden that falls heavier on women is the natural order of things. So they have to sort of sheepishly/passive-aggressively sneak their moments of noncompliance while still assuming all the expense and time lost commuting to go through the entire kabuki exercise. It’s like the bosses want it this way just to psychologically torture all the wokist dorks who talked all that shit back in 2021-22.

In other words: The Employer just wants to be a dick and waste employee time and energy commuting to sit in the office.

Many companies no longer have the office space to support RTO, so it's kind of a charade, like, "Let's have our 5,000 employees come into this office where we now have 1,200 seats."
