why no famous bands established at HYPS?

Good question. But, how many notable bands formed at a college, period? It's a small percent.
The time and effort it takes to make it as a band--thousands of hours playing instruments in a garage/basement/bedroom, playing hundreds of shows, traveling around--is close to mutually exclusive with doing well enough in HS to get into HYPS and succeeding academically at HYPS. People in bands that might make it are on a different track than people at HYPS.

quick google result:
public enemy, the doors, the strokes, pink floyd, queen, the pixies, coldplay, talking heads, REM, steely dan, radiohead.
but in general it seems you're right, not many out there. like you say, pretty impossible to tour if you're in college.
