Only losers and repeaters sit for the exam in February. Honestly, you might as well not even bother showing up.

What is the passage rate for Feb bar exam? I know it's lower than July, but is it actually sub-50% in NY or CA?

Let me Google that for you. February 2012 pass rates:

NY - 44%

CA - 43%

I say, fuck IRAC and let's just jump to the conclusion: YOUR SCREWED

lol, not me. But I genuinely feel for the people who fail despite studying their asses off (only to have to study their asses off AGAIN). I slacked like crazy.

never taken the bar, but how does one fail it?

i mean if schools have a passage rate in the 90s, that means the bottom of the class passed. isn't the bar just like a law school exam?

Lots of ways to fail the bar exam. Everything from pure choking to getting screwed by a trick question. Remember, the test is designed to weed out a good percentage of the test-takers.

no, the bar is not like a LS exam. Most LS exams (at least at good law schools) are open book, or at least allow you to bring outlines. Also, few LS exams involve multiple choice.

But really, I think most people who go to decent law schools and fail the bar fall into one of the following categories:

1) Don't study at all (either horrible time-management, or too busy enjoying summer to take the bar seriously) and not smart enough to compensate. Exam covers a lot of stuff and you have to actually know a few things.

2) Let the stress of the exam get to you - knowing that it's pass/fail and that 90% of your peers will pass is, in a way, more stressful than taking a law school exam where the worst you can do is B-. The "bigness" of the day can be overwhelming.

3) Medical/Psychological/Personal/Family issues - I know a girl who failed because she got sucker-punched by life events about a month before the bar exam. She had to try anyway (she had a job lined up and had already spent the first month studying), but obviously her mind was elsewhere.
