I applied for pandemic assistance with my state unemployment office last year. I didn't know what I was doing to apply for this, the instructions were terrible, but from everything that I read, the process for a self employed person was to apply for unemployment benefits, get denied, then you can proceed to the state/federal pandemic assistance. In my application I tried to make it very clear that I voluntary resigned and was just doing this for pandemic assistance (as I got legit assfucked in 2020 by the pandemic)

For some reason, they made me have an actual hearing to determine whether or not i qualified for unemployment benefits from my old employer (which I did not qualify).

I applied for this a year ago, and just now had my hearing.

I went into it and explained what I went through last year and the hardships that I had due to covid, that I applied with sketchy instructions and did what I thought was proper regarding my application, that I felt bad that my old employer had to take the time to attend this hearing, and that they do not owe me unemployment benefits but I was just trying to apply for pandemic assistance.

My boss got on to testify that he wouldn't hire me again after "this" (the unemployment claim), and that I was just trying to get pandemic "bucks" that he didn't think I deserved (he literally said "he doesn't deserve them"). I get that they were trying to defend the unemployment claim against them, but man come on.

Of course the unemployment judge corrected him and said that i followed the process exactly right (with filing for unemployment first) and that I was entitled to pandemic assistance.

Still chaps my asshole that my old mentor made these digs at me. 2020 and 2021 suck bros.

But some of their "exhibits" against me were literally taken from my instagram - one was a pic from my lyft app where I had a 5.0 rating after 569 rides. There was, for some reason, a link on the pic that says "view as driver" and they asked me all sorts of questions about being a lyft driver, as some way to show that i was getting extra income. I was like "i never ever drove for lyft, no idea why it says that." they wouldn't let that go for like five minutes.
