They only sold 6k in Q1 and 4k in Q2. Elon set up the factory to build 250k/yr, before later toning down sales projections to 150k/yr. So it looks like they’re on pace to fall short by at least 120k units this year.

such a niche product that it immediately saturated the market of those who want it.
and he timed his trumpist period terribly, from a cybertruck pov. Just when he needed to breach the containment of robo-nerds who like the product, and hit some mass appeal, he became a polarizing brand.
they gambled big on not making it just look like other trucks, and have enjoyed the benefits and costs of such a gamble. If it looked like a f150 or 1500 (like the model 3 looks like a bmw or audi), it would be doing much better

Elon fucked up by having a very public feud with trump. There were many trumpmos considering making the switch this year and he had to go running his mouth

It basically came in over budget and massively underdelivered. Range was far less, the extended range add-on was cancelled, instead of being a single cast metal body it included a bunch of metal pieces literally glued on at much greater cost. Then came all the reliability issues.

I think it's a lot of reasons. The design is polarizing. The CEO is polarizing. (Actually, at this point, the CEO has made pretty much everyone in America hate him.) There have been a series of well-publicized recalls, quality issues, and other high-profile failures (e.g., r/Cyberstuck). EV buyers tend to be shitlib, whereas truck buyers tend to be MAGA. And truck buyers tend to live in rural areas, where charging infrastructure is limited.
But I think there is a bigger reason, which is that electric trucks generally are not ready for prime time. And I say this as a Tesla owner and general hardcore pro-EV troll. EV's are shitty for off roading due to range limitations. Usually charging infrastructure in these areas is limited at best, and you can't exactly carry around a few extra gas cans. Also, from what I have read, range in an electric truck absolutely falls off a cliff when towing. If you can't tow and can't go off road, you have eliminated two of the three biggest reasons to buy a truck (the third obviously being to haul shit).
If you look at the numbers for the F-150 Lightning, it is barely doing better than the Cybertruck, and the gas-powered version has been the best-selling vehicle in the country for 40+ years. So I think the issue has less to do with the Cybertruck/Elon and more to do with the fact that people simply don't want electric trucks right now for the reasons I just outlined.

To be fair,
So Elon is no longer the RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD and will be forced to sell the company soon? Is that right, Ari??

ChatGPT, how do Tesla’s EVs compare to other EV brands in terms of quality?
📊 Consumer Reports & Other Independent Ratings
• Consumer Reports (CR) ranked Tesla as the 17th most reliable of 22 top brands—and one of the least reliable in EV rankings. Consumer surveys cited recurring issues with build quality, trim, paint, unusual noises, and electrical accessories.
• Tesla models appear among the worst-rated EVs: the Model S and Model X are on CR’s top 10 most unreliable EVs list, rated 2 out of 5 stars.
• Consumer Reports reliability scores for EVs show the Model 3 (score: 42) and Model Y (41) performing average to slightly below average compared to competitors like the Hyundai IONIQ 6 (50), Kia EV6 (31), and BMW i4 (82).
⸻
🧾 Build Quality & Real-World Complaints
• Tesla vehicles have endured sharp criticism for build issues and quality control, including trim gaps, suspension recalls, paint defects, and missing hardware—all attributed in part to fast production ramp‑ups.
• Experts and owners on forums commonly note Tesla ranks poorly on reliability metrics. As one summary said: “Tesla vehicles generally require more repairs than average and rank near the bottom for reliability compared to other automakers.”
• Cybertruck has been a particular point of concern; Forbes called it one of the largest flops in auto industry history due to multiple recalls and malfunction reports. As of early 2025, it had already undergone up to eight recalls for various defects.
