(Actually, at this point, the CEO has made pretty much everyone in America hate him.) There have been a series of well-publicized recalls, quality issues, and other high-profile failures (e.g., r/Cyberstuck). EV buyers tend to be shitlib, whereas truck buyers tend to be MAGA. And truck buyers tend to live in rural areas, where charging infrastructure is limited.
But I think there is a bigger reason, which is that electric trucks generally are not ready for prime time. And I say this as a Tesla owner and general hardcore pro-EV troll. EV's are shitty for off roading due to range limitations. Usually charging infrastructure in these areas is limited at best, and you can't exactly carry around a few extra gas cans. Also, from what I have read, range in an electric truck absolutely falls off a cliff when towing. If you can't tow and can't go off road, you have eliminated two of the three biggest reasons to buy a truck (the third obviously being to haul shit).
If you look at the numbers for the F-150 Lightning, it is barely doing better than the Cybertruck, and the gas-powered version has been the best-selling vehicle in the country for 40+ years. So I think the issue has less to do with the Cybertruck/Elon and more to do with the fact that people simply don't want electric trucks right now for the reasons I just outlined. |
