Public humiliation on foreign television (as with Lutnick's comments on the Japanese trade deal) or of nationals (as with South Korea) would cause deep national pain and anger.

The damage could last a long time, especially because both Japan and South Korea are key US allies who have been desperately been trying to appease Trump. That makes the "loss of face" even more acute. It may have contributed to the resignation of the Japanese Prime Minister
