Why don't developers in desert climate build the homes out underground?

Like have a tiny little surface facade with a sunporch and 1000 sf shit box
Then downstairs expand out to a 15k sf submerged mega mansion with retractable "sky lights" protruding from the ground that drones can launch from
You could put a gymnasium, Olympic pool, huge movie theater down there.
Run electricity from solar panels all over the yard to make it look industrial up top
Surround the whole lot with a 20 foot tall barbwired chain link fence, and have a few rotties posted up to marshall the grounds
What am I missing?
