The school has many impressive alumni in all kinds of fields (science, politics, arts and music, etc.) but a funny tendency to periodically just have some wild random, like a porn actress or desperate housewives actor or that fat black woman actress on parks and recreation. The mid-tier ivies Duke competes with don't produce famous alumni anymore so that's a surprise.

Every few years there is some scandal like the chick who was in porn while being a student, the lacrosse thing, etc. My guess is that because it attracts a lot of students who are smart but not quite HYP material, you have a lot of kids who studied hard in HS but go crazy when they have the chance in college. For some reason in things like medicine and biomedical engineering Duke overtook and so now there is a weird combination of Asian STEM intensity mixed with privileged children of NYC finance elite. Also, I am surprised to discover that Duke has been for decades an epicenter for Marxist thought--the one thing for which Duke has been particularly renowned is literary theory and critical theory, in which it was always ranked first. Suprisingly the Trump administration has come down extremely hard on Duke recently for other DEI-type stuff but has completely spared this one department which is surprising because at one point it produced a bulk of the ideology that MAGA-types complain about. |
