I am not a ballistics expertmo (and haven’t seen any videos and demurely don’t want to) but how the hell does a bullet traveling at 2000 mph hit a body and not just continued on its course? I would think it would have just smashed through whatever it hit - not make a 90 degree turn.

Eh, sounds like it's pretty standard riflery for a basic Marine: https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2021/02/23/the-new-marine-corps-rifle-qualification-is-here/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

It seems to me that the video was sufficiently effective as is. I don’t think you can tell what caliber of rifle from the video. It could be anything from .223 and up to .338 lapua (I doubt it a .338 or 300 winmag or anything like that). No second shot is vaguely informative as it makes it marginally more likely the shooter used a bolt action which makes it marginally more likely it was more like a 30 caliber or derivative of a 30 caliber: .308/7.62 NATO, .30-06 or necked down versions of one of those (e.g. .243 which is a necked down .308).

I have not seen that video. Link? I will say it did look like an odd shot placement/angle impact but hard to tell. When you shoot things (hunting or people) odd things sometimes happen. It would be wild if the shooter hit him in the plate carrier (which is a perfect shot for shooting someone without a vest) and it did bounce off and hit his neck. [EDIT: I now have seen the video and I am still not sure what happened]. However, a common answer is usually correct.

It looked to me like he might have been wearing a DJI type pod microphone under his shirt since they are ubiquitous for social media filming and he wouldn't necessarily have the PA systems audio for later sound bites. And that's what got "ricocheted" in those few frames

body armor doesn't cover the right shoulder, you can get a plate that gets most of your chest but anything on the shoulder is just nylon, and he didn't look to be wearing a plate, soft armor is nothing against actual rifles also

I tried to find a video of a bullet going off of a plate and could not get anything close. Then I went to armor videos and stats for battleships, and there is no way assuming it scales and even assuming a curved plate (which is a big assumption) and even assuming Kirk was wearing a cheap steel plate (an even bigger assumption) and that it was both steel and curved (another assumption). I don’t think it ricocheted.

In the frame by frame you can see how the bullet on his right shoulder turns and heads up to the neck area. There's literally a frame where it's right in between where you first see it appear and the cavitation wound. It literally travels visibly frame by frame. Watch it in slo mo and pause it when the bullet is in between the two areas.

You can agree that something that looks like a bullet appears on his right shoulder, moves towards the cavitation, and then disappears as his neck hole explodes. This is provable with the video evidence. It's indisputable.

this is nonsense and it is sad some people might think it isn't, hornady makes bullets, random bullets, they are mostly popular with reloaders who aren't even buying cartridges, just the bullets, and there is no such thing as a "pro caliber"

huh? 6.5 Creedmor is the Militarys Special Operations Command newly adopted caliber

last time you used one? never heard of anyone using this outside of Alaska for huge game or competitive long range shooting competitons

It's literally a pro caliber bullet and its designed to go subsonic after 1300 yards and push cartridges to the limit

you said "aren't hornady's mostly subsonics"

that is a nonsensical phrase, hornady's are all sorts of things and subsonic has nothing to do with 6.5 creedmoor

YouTube is suppressing all the gun guy videos which are usually the best analysis of these things. So annoying.

for a guy to walk away the most likely scenario is a bolt action with a short barrel and a folding stock, you could store that in a very regular bag in about 3 seconds and not worry about casings, I think .300 blackout would make a lot of sense but it really could be anything

One shot lends to bolt action or, you know, he saw the hit and said that did it.

Gun nerds ITT talking about the particular bullet. It's not a super-long shot. Any rifle with a decent shooter would do.

More interesting is how he concealed the gun and disappeared. Makes me suspect a short barrel and a folding stock, but even still he'd need to be carrying a bag. Most likely Mossad or Russia.

You can take an AR into upper and lower and put it in a back pack/computer bag in a few seconds. A lot of semi auto rifles are similar. A bolt action, not so much although I am sure there are those out there. Folding stock only matters if you don’t take it apart.

Analysis is a was the shot was more like 144 yards, not 200 yards. That’s a chip shot (ironically or not the same distance as the TRUMP shot). jeffostroff on youtube (the only gun guy video I found).

Why? Because you don’t think there was a supersonic crack? Hard to tell from the videos and shit audio but I think there was one, but a 300 blackout and a can (silencer) would be on my shortlist of things to use.

I NEED MY YOUTUBE GUN AUTISTS TO ANALYZE THIS

It was a .30-06 according to the ATF poast. The bullet drop is what got him in the neck imo. Over 2x the muzzle energy of .223 iirc.

He may have been trying for the chest. Since he was shooting downhill from an elevated position bullet drop is less. Intentionally trying to make a head or neck shot is not a great idea.

Imo it kind of is a good idea. His Head was wide due to skull expansion. And the head is at the center of the body and the shooter didn’t sight in perfectly. He doesn’t know he’s exactly 200 yards away without a rangefinder. So an indeterminate amount of bullet drop puts him at center of mass or a neck shot.

A .30-06 Mauser “imported” talk about a gun that would be very difficult to trace ….

A random hunting rifle initially sold before any records, maybe never went though an FFL ….

Maybe a model 66?
