mold and its spores are kind of gross, but your immune system can brush that stuff aside with ease. directly eating a shitload of moldy food might make you kind of sick for a day, but merely having mold in the walls or something is just irrelevant. it's nasty, but not an actual source of malady.

There are definitely respiratory risks in water-damaged buildings with mold growth that produce mycotoxins. Not everyone gets sick, but that doesn't mean it's fake. To the extent anyone says the evidence is weak they are probably talking about the fact that it doesn't cause specific systemic mycotoxicosis but to the people have issues its often a mixed aerosol causing various issues under specific exposure conditions.
also what about people who just get fungal pneumonia and shit because they have AIDS? normal spores in the air regardless of if you have visible growth on walls causes that and its definitely not psychosomatic.

mold tends to be coincident with other sanitation and infestation problems. if you look at air conditioners linked to legionnaires' outbreaks, they usually have mold, but mold is not the actual issue. people with all sorts of lung conditions may worsen under humid stagnant conditions regardless of mold status, which is why oldschool sanitoria were usually near the sea or in deserts.
