I just watched it for the first time it was incredible. It's a completely original twist on the vampire genre. It's kinda like Interview With the Vampire + Jojo Rabbit + Moonrise Kingdom + Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It's on Amazon Prime rn.

Spawned a remake and a TV show but nothing came close to the original. Also austere Scandinavian cinematography. Mark Kermode said it's one of his favorite films of all time if that means anything to you.

I'm OP. I watch about two films per decade but somehow this one made the cut. Still haven't watched the remake but I also have not re-watched the original because I remember it too well, even the opening with the dood draining blood in the park. Jesus what a classic. Dood harvesting blood for this little girl was so sweet.

Subject: Spoilers

In the book Eli is a boy who was castrated by some pedo vampire and permanently stuck as an adrogenous preteen. And Håkan the guy who is with zher is also a pedo and tries to raep zhim or something. I didn't read the book but that was in the synopsis. And when they went to make the movie they were like uh this is too fucking sick and dark so we have to tone it down.

But in the movie Eli does say 'I'm not a girl' so technically she's supposed to be a dude even though they went with a girl for the casting. Also of note is that they used an older woman to dub all of Eli's lines. Apparently she had a squeaky high pitched voice in real life and it sounded weird so they found some voice actress who sounded older to dub everything.

And to think despite all that it's still as fucked up as it is.

That's real sick shit. At the time all I could think was something like "Obama's Sweden." I thought maybe it was meant to illustrate how Scandinavia had produced a generation of isolated foreveralones. The movie required you to accept that you can still live like this in Sweden forever, just moving from town to town. That old burn victim in the hospital was this boy's future, but that's a choice he made at like age 12 because it saved him from bullying.

The scene that really got me is the Olds hanging around drinking. That shit is so accurate. It's really true all over Europe. People hit 50 and they have the minimum amount of money to live on and they just hang out and drink all day. It's so commonplace up there. So many older folks just check out and drink every day.

The most unrealistic aspect of the movie was that white people would ever bully each other. It doesn't make any sense. Plus you can find dozens of clips on YouTube of women from around the world talking about how Swedish guys are pussies and have no confidence. Bullying is non existent there. They're all raised to be pussies.

I used to go to this train station a lot in France and every morning the same cleaning staff would be cleaning up puke from the bums that slept there and they had an ongoing relationship. The cleaning ladies would be moping up the puke going hey how are you, how was your night. They saw each other every day. For some reason you would never see this in the US. It's just not as personal. Over there bums and cleaning ladies can have a close bond. This one guy used to say all the time that he had a place to go home to but he lived in the train station because he hated his wife lol. I don't know if it was true but he used to say it a lot.

Apparently also the American subs are trash. The director was pissed at the lack of nuance. Supposedly there's a British version that did a much better job at translating. My Swedish isn't great but I did notice that sometimes the subs would translate two out of three sentences and leave the last one out. If I had the blu ray I could read along with Swedish subs and report back.
