I'm thinking of buying some speakers.

There's a pair I'm eyeing for $5k. It's very out of step with my current income / savings objectives. And it probably wouldn't represent a legitimate $5k improvement over my current setup.

But the pair I'm eyeing is relatively new, very well reviewed, and a third party has measured them using super fancy test equipment and found them to more than pass muster. So there is an objective basis to think they may be endgame speakers for me.

And they are made in Chyna... so there's ample reason to think I'll never see these things new for $5k ever again

Wdym? You think the tariff threat is overblown?

I voted for Trump. I'm not gonna be overly pissed about spendy electronics. My only TV dates to 2007 and I'm not replacing it anytime soon.

I'm just thinking of getting ahead of things in my one favorite little niche.

no, i doubt tariffs will come to pass.

better question is: why are you buying expensive chinese-made speakers? good speakers are made in the US, UK, Canada, France, Denmark, etc.

The specific speakers I'm looking at are Mofi 888s.

AZN manufacturing is absolutely everywhere in the speaker game these days, it's borderline pointless to fight it.

yes, but not because of the tariffs. I'm just in the market for a new PC and it's finally time to start buying the components. First one will be the RTX 5090 when it drops in about two weeks. I'll have to physically go to MicroCenter early in the morning and wait in line.

$5k for two speakers from china that don't have a long track record and that you've never listened to yourself but "think" they're good based on "online tests," and you're bankrupting yourself to buy them because it will "save" you money on speculatice tariffs? wekcome to the tommy turdskin school of home theater.

stupid logic behind this proposed purchase aside, anything above $1k per speaker, assuming you're spending efficiently and not buying bose or some other garbage, is going to come down entirely to personal preference, and a $2k speaker is not necessarily going to be better than a $1k speaker so it's *especially* dumb to buy something in that price bracket that you haven't heard yourself.

Stereo stores are not only vanishingly rare, the remaining ones are also retarded and gay. They're never gonna have the brands you want to make a true comparison, they don't have showrooms that approximate your own listening space, etc. They're all dying anyway, there's only like half a dozen non-Best Buy stores in my major metro and half of those are by appointment only.

Every speaker I've ever bought I've purchased without hearing first, and I've been happy enough with. No reason to think a $5k pair would be any different.

The tests I'm speaking of are those made by a Klippel scanner, it's a fancy rig that costs like $50-100k. How it works is that by making a bajillion automated nearfield measurements it can approximate the sorts of testing that can otherwise only by done in a much more painstaking manner with a full blown anechoic chamber. It's pretty elite stuff, audio magazines don't even do this shit, it's like two dedicated online hobbyists who have these things and do all kinds of tests that they publish for free.

These days speaker purchases do *not* necessarily boil down to personal preferences. Why is that? Well, if you have a speaker that is highly equalize-able (which is what the Klippel testing can reveal), you can just EQ them to get them to sound how you want. The trouble is, not all speakers are very equalize-able.

The Klippel results of the speakers I am looking at leave me 99% confident that I'll like them. Whether I like them straight out of the box or with a touch of room EQ is something I'll figure out on my own.

I'm not bankrupting myself, I can cut a check for them. There's a large part of me that does not want to cut that check. The other part of me says YOLO. I'm in my 40's, my ears aren't getting any better and as I said, they may well be the last big speaker purchase I ever make. Who knows, I might stop incessantly reading about speaker reviews and and other audiophile jerkoff shit

it's really weird that you're spending a lot on some weird chink brand when there are lots of good speaker companies out there with 40+ year reputations.

the main reason to go to a local speaker store is that they'll often have returns or floor models at great prices. think $8000 focals or dynaudio for $6000

Mofi isn't a weird chink brand, it literally is a US brand with a 40+ year rep (they are newish to the electronics biz admittedly)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Fidelity_Sound_Lab

The guy who designed their speakers is a guy by the name of Andrew Jones, who has got to be the most famous currently active speaker designer.

These speakers are not at all a shot in the dark. There's a reason why 2/3 of the colorways are now backordered 6 months after they hit the market.

honestly unless you're a bona fide "audiophile" (be honest with yourself), a $250 soundbar will be more than enough

Buying "speakers" from "China" is such a boomer tell
