It was more like:
-Christianity becomes a large enough minority to be politically relevant, especially since they're common in urban areas.
-Roman emperors try to stamp them out, fail.
-Roman emperor instead makes an alliance with them and sponsors them.
-Christianity is now the new hotness at the Imperial court, and the pro-Christian emperor lives a long time, so tons of people join up.
-There are conservative holdouts in the upper class, especially in Rome itself, but they are a dwindling minority and eventually die out especially after Theodosius abolishes all pagan worship.
-There are pagan remnants in the countryside for hundreds of years but progressive conversion efforts slowly whittle them away.

Some stupid chatter about AD/CE above.
Did you know that Jesus's birth year would have to be prior to 4 BC, the year of King Herod's death?
Most of the account of Jesus's birth (the Christmas story) has not basis in any history, such as King Herod's killing of infants.
Moreover, Matthew and Luke provide completely different genealogies for Jesus (each purportedly giving the ancestry through Joseph) and inconsistent accounts of Jesus's birth. 2 of the Gospels ignore the birth account. So does Paul.
The New Testament is fiction.
