it wasn't "highly rated." such a lie. it had a small number of viewers and the median age of those viewers was 68. advertisers don't pay much for shitty audiences.

on top of weak ratings, it had a massively bloated production cost and was losing something like $40 million per year.

The most fascinating statistic was that CBS sort of pushed out Letterman for Colbert to get younger because his average viewer was 58, and 10 years later, Colbert's average viewer is 68.

It's almost as if Colbert didn't get a single new viewer and just steadily lost Letterman viewers over the years.
