It was the best of gens, it was the worst of gens, it was the age of timed exclusives, it was the age of no exclusives, it was the epoch of innovation, it was the epoch of monetization, it was the season of SSDs, it was the season of patches, it was the spring of instant loading, it was the winter of broken launches, we had everything before us, we had No Games, we were all going direct to 60fps, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the generation was so far like the present generation, that some of its noisiest influencers insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
There was a Gen X guy at Xbox, and a Japanese Engineer, at the helm of Console Gaming. In both kingdoms it was clearer than crystal to the western lords of the subscription services and live service economies, that things in general were settled forever.
