That's called idiots unable to swim and going into the ocean. My father never did anything athletic but he survived getting slammed by an 8ft wave and had to stay under for about 30secs because a second wave came by as he surfaced. And he had a black eye from the initial impact. That happened when I was young and was daring everyone to bodysurf. So the only risk of getting killed is if you do it at the shoreline. Once it's deep enough that you don't get slammed into the sand only a loser would drown.
P.s. when I was training to be a lifeguard there was absolutely no one who would fail the test of swimming under water toward the end of the pool and retrieving a 20lbs weight. It's just not hard. Swimming distance in a certain time is much harder.
