Apatow Films seem like a different era. also has 90s-isms like it being Normal to drive crappy cars, and Mary's kitchen is small and Closed Concept with Ruinous countertops. 90s COL was cheaper because you could drive a Chevy Cavalier and wear Flannel and it was nbd, like people didn't ghost you over it. |

In fact he's one of 4 undesirable guys in the movie who are obsessed with Mary and have to come up with schemes to try to win her over.
Shallow Hal is similar. Pudgy beta Jack Black thinks he hit the jackpot dating Gwyneth Paltrow who is comically out of his league. It ONLY makes sense because unbeknownst to him, she's actually obese and very physically unattractive IRL.
If anything, both films' need to explain the otherwise unbelievable reinforces that it is, in fact, extremely out of place and not possible for regular guys to get beautiful women.
