W towel wrapped over handlebars at 8 am after toaster strudel, pool membership pin pinned on swimsuit by mom, meeting my middle school friends there, called a guy “buddy” and he said “how did you know my name,” played there until 1, including diving board and outdoor handball court and frog in little garden between lap pool and goof off pool, and snack bar w candy bars and Mr Pibb, biked home for pbj and afternoon hbo movie … read novelization of current blockbuster, walked my dog in the undeveloped woods behind our house—ticks OMG!!— cut the grass or watered the lawn, planned d&d adventure for the weekend while studying Monster Manual, listened to Beatles album I bought at record store for $8 until I fell asleep after dinner and Atari: 1980s life

My kin are all struggling far away in West Virginia. Dad’s WVU PhD enabled him to flee the coal town with its terrible life options and company school during boomer paradise time when all was possible. His dissertation was less than 30 pages but it was enough.

Dad’s sisters (my lovely much abused aunts) all feel their fob dad spoiled my dad growing up because dad was a boy and he got extra care and language lessons in grandpa’s barber shop and lol extra tuition money for a repeated college semester (calculus!) while dads sisters had to take the bus into town for home ec and typing.

I am safe then because my parents escaped.

Mom and dad are together. Dad made mom mad by putting up “warning” stickers on the pantry door of new house. The warning stickers are basically outdated 1970s jokes cautioning housewives against eating too much. Shortly thereafter Dad buys new pantry door because he can’t remove the stickers sufficiently to satisfy angry mom. Good times. Late 70s early 80s progressing to late 80s
