i was a partner at baker hostetler (dc office). the firm overall is ttt in that they pay market only for first years and only in major markets.
so a first year in dc, ny or la is making $225k and a fourth year probably makes $294k or some random number that is substantially below market.
IIRC first years in clv made way less. when first years were at 190, i think first years in ohio were in the 160 range, maybe closer to 150.
JONES DAY is the #1 firm obviously, with BH #2. i don't think JD pays lockstep, but i've heard their pay is better.
another data point - as a labor atty i worked with the erisa guys regularly. one of the doods in cleveland told me that they lost a really good erisa associate (6-7th year) who DOUBLED her salary going to another biglaw firm. so it's possible that even if a first year makes 180 or 190 in cleveland, they have senior associates barely making 300.

college doesn't matter anymore lol
it's not going to help or hurt him getting a job. the jobs you get after college now have pretty much nothing to do with what you "studied" and got your "degree" in in college

I hire people like this for my shitlaw firm. I start them out at about 85k a year with limited benefits.
Some of the stories that I hear from these people about previous employers are crazy. I appear to pay way above market for shitlaw associates. Standard comp seems to be mid five figures. However, that number is really more revenue than profit since it typically covers *everything* including CLE's, bar dues, computer, travel, etc. The least that I have encountered was a chick from a shitlaw firm that was dying, who was making 45k.

side note on her, at the time i worked for this 5'6" fat jewish man who was almost 70 and was a closet case. he hit on me constantly, i've poasted about that before.
anyway, he is abrasive as shit and fights with everyone around him (except me, ljl) so he and this lady hated each other.
i actually poasted about this in the last week or so, but in one of those depositions i referred to above, thatcher had this lady on the witness stand and they started giggling about how "handsome" i was. thatcher may have smoked out that this guy was a closet fag or something and was trying to get under his skin. he got so pissed at her basically openly flirting with me.
she then started offering me a job when we were on breaks in the depo (i lived right by her office, but the solo's office was in baltimore, which was a 45 min drive from my house). he completely hit the roof, it was lol.

Clerk at local county court, then work in small firm for a couple years to learn the ropes, then hang a shingle. That's a decent enough GPA from a decent enough law school that he could definitely make it.
State government sinecure.
Regional law firm or regional law firm to regional in house.
The path isn't as clear as T6 ls->v25 firm, but there are plenty of decent options and outcomes for someone who works hard and takes advantage of opportunities. In a lot of ways, the paths are better than a V25 associate striving for a few years before getting up or outed. The Akron grad will probably have a lake house in 10 years while the t6 grad will be wondering if he can afford kids.
