Golf goes back further. The first international golf (and soccer) matches were between England and Scotland and they just kept doing it that way while adding more countries.

International tennis came later.

but even for individual events when they're technically not "playing for" a country, why are they still listed by country not all under the UK?

Because they started it that way and have different golf federations for England and Scotland. Tennis has one federation for the UK.

Looked it up because I was curious. Wales seems to have its own.

The golf federation for Ireland includes Northern Ireland as well which is odd but makes sense given Ireland used to be part of the UK and maybe they didn't want to split up the golf federation when they left or something.

i never knew this. explains why wales plays in the world cup though the country would be wise to unify and stand a chance for once

Wouldn't make much difference. Wales and Scotland and NI are tiny compared to England and none of their players would even get into the England team with a few exceptions over the years like Gareth Bale and Ryan Giggs.

It would be like Hong Kong joining the Chinese team or Puerto Rico joining the US team.

They do it for tennis and the Olympics because they probably had to at the beginning when those competitions were set up.

The Olympics for example was started by continental Euros who didn't want 4 British teams when their countries only get one.

They field separate teams in soccer and golf because international soccer and golf started with England and Scotland and they got in from the beginning when they were dominant, and had the clout and tradition to keep it going since then.

Also the UK isn't unique in this.

Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, etc have their own teams at the World Cup and Olympics despite being part of other countries.
