every year in cfb this happens and I cannot understand the logic, you are not turning the season around, half the guys aren't going to be on the team next year, why throw the entire program into chaos rather than just letting the coach ride out the season and firing him then?

if it’s a major program it’s basically a flashing ad to all the rising/hot commodity coaches that there’s an opening for them, start the talks early, avoid them signing massive extension or taking a lesser gig

if it’s a middling program idk. that’s a good Q. sometimes it does pan out. get the gears in motion for new season sooner.

c'mon man. this is leadership 101. you can't publicly declare the exec is a dead man walking without firing him. it destroys morale. it's different if he's stepping down or you have a successor named.

idk, it seems to me that declaring the season is such a failure the coach needs to be out of the building this very week is worse for morale

i feel the same way. However then you have situations like Florida firing their coach right before the biggest game of their season against UGA and then almost winning the game

for 1, i don't think you want to go through recruiting only to fire your coach *closer* to national signing day then have all your recruits bail

If you wait until the season is over you miss out on the portal window for roster construction. So you get an extra shitty year 0 with new coach and new regime is up and running for year 1. Basically by giving up on current season early, you can start building for the future earlier

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/cfb-head-coach-buyouts-already-near-200m-why-teams-firing-hcs-now

Athletic directors are forced to act this way because of the structure of the sport," Klatt said. "It is the business model that they're in. So, they have to react to current realities, and the current reality right now is that the structure of the calendar is forcing them to be prepared for roster building in the first week of December.

there's sometimes a possum effect where the team does better under some interim coach just because it's fresh and different

I think it’s because it allows the next team to hire the coach pick up some of the salary owed iirc
