Assume this works under the salary cap and one of the reasons the Celtics would do it is to avoid having a $500m roster next season.

Do the Mavs do this? They get a generational talent who based on his work ethic and age is likely to come back healthy after missing all of next season. Celtics get salary relief and bring the lifelong Celtics fan and Maine native home.

Who says no first?

Tatum gets a bad rap because he's boring and a tryhard (lethal combo) but he's a first ballot HOFer if he retired today.

He just played the best game of his career and he's only 27. He scored 42 points in MSG on the road against a great defensive team on a night when his teammates didn't do fuckall. He's a 6x All-Star, 3x All-NBA first team, 3x top 10 in MVP voting, and has a ring. He's a much better competitor than Luka, cares way more about winning and being great. If he didn't just blow out his ankle there would still be people arguing Boston would win Game 5 at home, have a good chance in Game 6, and anything can happen in a Game 7. I have no idea what the "knock" is on a generational player of his caliber. He's already beaten or tied several franchise records held by Larry Bird and John Havlicek and likely to break more. What is the downside of this player, that he doesn't talk shit or scowl? People think he's boring? I don't. I love him.

He was really bad in the finals last year (38% shooting, 26% from three) and got benched in the Olympics and took that really hard. I think it's slightly unfair but he has a history of coming up short in big games. Even in this series to not get a shot at the end of game 2 was a bad look.

You're nuts, dawg. Keep smoking the tutu. Tatum was not "bad in the Finals." He literally went off in the first half of every game and wore out and exhausted the Mav's defense. In the second half of those games Jalen Brown was able to take the Mavs to school because they were so tired from defending Tatum. It looked to normies like Tatum needed Brown to finish those games but he was balling out in the first halves of all those games. You just sound like you're hating.

"He's a much better competitor than Luka, cares way more about winning and being great"

luka has the 2nd highest playoff points average in nba history, second only to MJ

tatum regularly disappears when the lights are bright. look at his stats during the finals last year. look at what he did in this series against the knicks prior to last night.

luka also carried an inferior team to the playoffs multiple years in a row. and his gravity/ability to handle being blitzed raises the 3 pt percentage of the people around him.

get the fuck out of here with this nonsense in saying that tatum is a better competitor than luka.

Google anything that any analyst said about those Finals. Google anything by Stephen A or Windy or whoever.

There is no question Luka is possibly if not likely the best offensive player in the league right now. But that is not the only dimension to the game. Physical fitness, defense, competitiveness are all key factors. You're entitled to your opinion but the questions about Luka's dedication to the game have been going on for a very long time and were a major factor in him getting traded this year. So don't take my word for it. Yes he's a special player and he has the potential to be great but you have to look at the bigger picture.

he has far more than 2-3 seasons of elite production left, achilles are a long recovery injury but you can get back to more or less your old self these days. look at kevin durant.

the argument for dallas doing it would be:

- kyrie is injured next season anyway

- tatum is a better roster fit, with flagg they have a glut of interior guys and he probably can't play SF in the nba

- tatum is obviously proven while flagg is not

one reason dallas wouldn't do it is because tatum is making $60m next season. but what if i told you the offer was on the table not now, but at the end of next season and here were cooper's stats in his rookie year: 12.3 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg, 35% from three in 28 minutes per game.

Horford - utterly cooked

Porzingis - no ability to stay on the court whatsoever. KAT dominated offensively and on the boards. Knicks had an absurd number of rebounds.

Holiday - he is signed for like one million years into the future but can't play offense whatsoever. He was a great defender and a character guy in his prime. He will be making 37 million dollars in his age 37 season. They really bought this guy at the top of his market. He's already out of gas and that's a bad sign.

But the elephant in the room is obviously Jalen Brown who is a 50 million dollar player who scores 20 points and was terrible in the clutch this entire series. I think you have to look into moving him. If Brad wants to be aggressive and is looking at how to win multiple championships, you look into acquiring a different superstar to pair with Tatum when he comes back. You're now scrambling to find the next Pau Gasol or an AD, someone who can be Robin to Tatum's batman. Because last night Tatum looked like Kobe and Jalen Brown looked pedestrian.

Yes I think they trade Jaylen Brown. Derrick White as well too. They will dump Porzingis for peanuts and Horford will retire before Tatum plays again. Pritchard stays. They cant have a 1 billion dollar payroll with Tatum out all of next year. Might as well tank, the Brown/Tatum window is closing.

They're keeping Derrick White. He's signed through the end of the decade. His contract is OK. He played OK. He's not on my shit list. Brown does not play like a guy who makes 50 million, our two centers are cooked and just got raped by KAT, and Holiday can't score buckets at all. Holy shit Brown makes 65 million dollars in 2029.

The good thing about next year being a lost season as Tatum recovers is that they can use it as an excuse for a mini rebuild year. So they can potentially go to the draft or something, get some players who aren't necessarily ready to win now, and prepare for 2027.

Derrick White is awesome but I think they will want to completely rebuild the roster for when Tatum gets back. Agree that Brown is not worth his max deal and they should look to get value for him. 65 mill is a lot for a guy without a left hand.

Sucks to be the new owner who will be in charge of the tank celts.

The new "owner" is just some managing partner of a PE firm. Who knows who really pulls the strings. The money could have all come from Vladimir Putin for all we know.

The main goal of the firm is to cut payroll and tank until they can build an arena in Everett and stop having to pay the Bruins rent money anymore. The Emir is probably happy they don't have to make a single win-now move this off-season. Just blow it all up, get some young unproven prospects, wait for Tatum to come back. In 2027 you go package all your newly acquired prospects and send them to some poverty franchise for a perennial All-Star and load up for 2028.

Where is Danny Ainge when you need him? This is his bread and butter. Trading Al Jefferson for KG.

Brad is sneaky good at dumping salary and getting some return. Some of his salary dump moves in the past two years that people thought were just throwaways actually got valuable players back the other way. Do I think they're going to package up some of these guys in exchange for any big name superstar players? No. I'm not delusional.

At this point you're looking at building for a championship run in 2028. There's 2 types of players Brad needs to target, prospects and role players. A big issue this season has been a lack of depth on the bench. Danny was much better than Brad at filling out the bench roster, and they need to go get some guys who can take up minutes in the playoffs while the starters rest.

I also think Brad needs to consider what a blockbuster trade in the 2027 off-season might look like. If we can acquire prospects now that will be attractive to some other team, we may be able to push all our chips in and go get another star for Tatum to play with. There's always somebody who is unloading a Jimmy Butler or a Kevin Durant type of player. You have to be chalk full of prospects when opportunity strikes.

I think Brad has the capacity to make all the right moves and so far he's been a great GM.

there are two or three teams with enough cap space to absorb more salary than they are sending out. and they will want to be compensated for that, so I think it'll be difficult to get viable role players for these really awful contracts.

their only option might be to trade long-term bad deals for shorter-term bad deals and get picks on top. think someone like bradley beal. but then there is no way they are contending in 2028 and tatum's window is likely gone.

i don't see any good options for them. a full rebuild wouldn't be the worst play.

You're insane lol. Durant came back after an Achilles injury and was still a top tier player. Unloading salary is not a death sentence. Yes they need to reboot, but there's a difference between a retool and a full reboot. They're not going to give up on Tatum period. If you think they're cooked you're delulu. There will be short term pain but they can rebuild this team by adding decent role players and trade prospects for All-Stars. Every championship team does this. Look at how the Warriors were able to acquire Wiggins, then Butler. You can go get guys you need to win titles, dummy.

In real life Brad makes the trades. He is excellent at it so far. Trades aren't made by computers homie, they're made by picking up the phone and calling people.

Aight I’m tappin' out — arguin' with you is like yellin' at a drunk leprechaun in a Larry Bird jersey. Go light a candle at the altar of Paul Pierce or somethin'.

The trade I've always seen is Giannis for Flagg - and Giannis is probably a better asset even when Tatum was healthy.

It's not that Tatum for Flagg is a bad idea for the Mavericks (trading the unkown for the known) - its that they can probably get a similar non-hurt player.

theyre not "assets" once you have to pay them dynastic wealth every year and they can cry and demand trades or sit out with minor boo boos. theyre liabilities at that point which is why the mavs shouldnt fall for this crap.
