That's all anyone had to look at for 300,000 years. Of course they had accurate calendars and went apeshit over eclipses. That shouldn't impress you. Instead you should axe yourself whether it's really plausible that no one put rocks in fire and made optical glass until Galileo or some shit. They probably "invented" it 10,000 times, then the glass got broken by looters and the people who invented it were raped and enslaved.
