in the 1980s. Koreans running the government saw what Japan was doing and they got fearful. Samsung was saying "we can make VCRs too" but the Government refused to believe them. They were told to make construction equipment instead. That's the power of Japan.

When I was there I had some Sony products, just basic shit like headphones or whatever. It drew comments, because at that time Japanese electronics couldn't be sold over the counter in any store. People understood that and Sony and Panasonic were better, but you only get them from black market sellers, and even if you owned one you wouldn't want other people to know about it.
