like other than your family members did any older male ever bother to try to teach you something or help you along with your career at a young age?

very first job was a corpo job in mfh

jewish guy was assigned as my "mentor". he was just like the stuff i wrote about it in "dinner with andre" thread. Fake goy name, two first names. Taller and almost passing. Neurotic and sarcastic and quippy

one day i didnt wear a belt. I was 22 and didnt know shit about corpo-wear i guess. He grabbed my elbow and tried to parade me around office, announcing "this kid has no belt"

most well-adjusted people at larger companies have older more experienced guys at work who look out for them and try to help them out. terms like “mentor” are a product of the workplace being commandeered by careerist women and emasculated over-earnest evangelical types.

When I first started out, I had people that would try to take advantage of me and get me to do their work for them.

After awhile, I built relationships that have lasted and those folks have looked out for me, I guess.

I sacrificed a lot when I was younger and look where it has led me.

I had one great mentor who was a former practice group head and came up under a leading lawyer in my field. He was fantastic and I’m still in touch occasionally even though he’s retired. My fatal mistake was that I trusted he would still have the juice to get me made partner. He did not. Ironically, I also worked closely with the young gun partner who took over for him. He didn’t go to bat for me to make partner (at a v10 firm where it’s impossible to make partner in my group), and I left the firm. The younger guy left for a different firm and I’m still friends with him and might give him business. I vacillate between being resentful that I didn’t make partner to being happy that I am a client now with a 10x better life. (I now personally manage ~$20MM in legal spend per year and these cockroaches are all on my nuts to get business.)

love this thread about bros (occasionally) helping bros.

i had guys who i learned a lot from, but i never managed to turn it into the quasi-son, golden child thing that you see some guys pull off. which was my fault, because when i was younger, i had a bit of an anti-authoritarian streak, would be the junior complaining about bullshit deadlines or work/projects that made no sense, would sometimes correct the boss, and am too autistic to let certain things go.

maybe the guy i learned the most from was close in age and more of a colleague/slight boss, with more natural charisma than i've ever seen - seeing that up close was an education.

and honestly now, i've got a senior lady boss with a super high-powered background, who overtly talks about "mentorship" and mentoring me specifically, and it's great. even though xo consensus is that lady bosses are to be avoided, she's 180 so far and seems to like me.
